Puppy trying to go back home? Puppy Attatchment?

Above a photo of Johnny Cash (jack russell mix).
Someone gave me this dog mid August when she was 2 months old. I had her from mid August till the end of September so when she left she was 3.5 months old. I gave her away because I just couldn't keep her.
Johnny Cash followed me around the house everywhere from day one (nearly), when her sister left (nina simone in pic) I let her sleep with me at night. She was so attatched to me that she would cry when I left the house even when my roommates were there to keep her company. I used to take her to work with me during the day also, and at the park on weekends I would let her go without a leash/lead because she always stuck near me, and would come when called.
I loved this dog. The day the people came to take her, we walked down the stairwell and even then she would pause to make sure I was behind her. I couldn't help it, I started to cry and got down near her to say good bye and she started licking my tears away. She also used to lick my legs when I got out of the shower.
I am just sick to have abandoned her. The people said she keeps trying to dig her way out of the garden (trys to go through or under their fence). I wonder if she isn't trying to come home. I wonder if she is waiting for me to come and get her.
Someone write me something concerning the adjustment and long term memory of puppies this age and breed. I am totally beside myself with guilt and regret.
Thank you,
Leah
