DNA testing is done on the baby and the father AFTER the baby is born. And, no, it's not free.
Every possible father will have to be tested. The DNA of only one of them will match the baby's.
Right, I shouldn't have said "the father." I should have said, "Any possible fathers."
Why do you need to know the identity of the father now - possible that you aren't sure who the father is?
I had a DNA test done while pregnant, but had a medical reason for it. They are expensive and you could risk pre-mature delivery.
THANK YOU Emland. Too many cop shows are showing in the womb DNA testing as though it's the same as after the baby is born.
DNA testing can be done while the baby is still in utero, however it is expensive and carries enormous risks to both mother and fetus.
I work in the obstetric field and I don't know of one doctor who will do this strictly for paternity. There have to be other risk factors involved, and the test has to be medically necessary.
As everyone else has already said, unless there's a medical reason, you cannot get a DNA test until after the baby is born.
I'm surprised that the baby's father is letting his family talk him into risking his child's life by suggesting a DNA test while the baby is still in utero (a very risky and expensive procedure that no doctor would agree to do simply to establish DNA). It doesn't sound like he trusts you. If he did, he'd tell his family to mind their own business.
There is also no legal reason to test before birth. The father does not have to listed on the birth certificate nor sign an acknowledgement of paternity at birth,
