I have a small centrifugal pump I wish to install as a waterfall pump in a small backyard pond. Since the intake pipe will be visible in the water I'd like to use 1 1/2" ABS (since it's black) with a foot valve from the pond to the pump. The intake on the pump is threaded for 1" pipe. I'd need to adapt from the 1 1/2" ABS to 1" PVC to thread into the pump. Is this possible/feasible? Thanks for your help.

Could you just run 1" abs all of the way, why the size difference?

OK, well you can use a reducer coupling or just paint PVC black with Fusion Krylon Fusion Spray Paint for Plastic (12 oz.) - KRY2XXX-Series A black rubber hose would also work and easier to get it to lay on the pond floor.

Paint won't last underwater and I need a foot valve to hold the prime for the pump so pipe is necessary. Thanks very much...

Considering this is not inside the house, get a 1 1/2 >1" PVC adapter or a rubber sleeved fernco adapter.

With regard to both answers, based on what I've found out so far I still would not be able to glue either of them to ABS pipe. I'm told it requires a different glue and joints with PVC or conduit wouldn't be watertight. Thanks for your input, though.

The adapter is PVC, the conduit is PVC. PVC is PVC no matter what the color is. Regular PVC primer and glue.
If you go with the ABS use an all purpose PVC/ABS glue. Prime and glue. Put joint together, then immediately pull apart. You will see ruminants of the black ABS on the white PVC. Means the solvent is penetrating both surfaces. Re-coat and put joint together. It will be water tight.

Sorry guys, but it is my understanding that all purpose cement can be used on PVC, ABS, and CPVC, but it CANNOT be used to interchangeably join materials, i.e., you can't cement an ABS fitting onto a PVC pipe. Simply put, as much as these joints can be joined together and ONE joint will surely be fine in the application intended here, the materials expand/contract at different rates and would definitely be an issue in the long run!

One joint for a waterfall pump, OK, but multiple joints in a home application...NO WAY!!

PS: Have you contacted a local plumbing supply house to see if they have the ABS reducing male adapter? If not, try a plumbing supply store...surely they could order one for you...;)

Oh, I guess I would use a 1" ABS nipple and then screw a 1" x1.5" ABS bushing onto the 1" ABS nipple and then screw on a 1.5" ABS female adapter to join to the pipe....that should do it (you could also use a PVC nipple and bushing, too)!!

It's that 1" ABS nipple and bushing that throws the curve at me since my local source doesn't carry anything smaller than 1 1/2". That also applies to the foot valve I'll have to buy - 1 1/2".

I could probably go online to find some of what I'll need but in my area, the biggest problem I've ever had for a project like this is buying all the parts at the same place so they stand a better chance of fitting together. I know they're supposed to be standard sizes but I've learned the hard way that some manufacturers are 'off by a hair' just enough that things sometimes don't fit together.

I have used the all purpose to join PVC fitting to ABS. Granted it was drainage pipe and there is not much pressure, but then neither should this pump pipe have any pressure on it.

Yes that's a pin stripe bowl I made for wife, the 16 stays are bloodwood, white, black and white verniers for pin strips. Rim is holly. Top and bottom are Wemge. Looks better in real life, can't see much detail in avatar.
