Cut out the damaged pipe. If the pipe has a crack 3" long, the amount of damaged pipe is probably longer. Cut a new piece of pipe to fit between the cuts, put a shielded coupling on each end. Put in place, slide shielded couplings over joints and tighten.
You could use a glue coupling on one end but why make it any harder than it has to be. The metal shielding of the couplings will make the pipe just as ridged.
In order to center the couplings over the joints, the minimum cut out has to be at least as long as the length of one coupling.
