Sorry Shiela as it seems your thead kind of got hijacked by Tboz and now things are all messed up... *UGH*.

Please repost more info. On this and I'll respond pretty quick off, OK?

If the leak doesn't show up until you drain the tub then the gasket is certainly suspect here... could be that you didn't tighten the strainer enough, maybe?

This tub doesn't have a tub liner does it?

    Back to you...

    Hi Sheilagr

Again, my apologies as I try to answer questions in a manner that doesn't get into a back and forth back and forth, but I must admit that I got lost here somehow... *ugh*.

You said, "There is a mushy spot on underside of tub about 2 inches long 3/4 inch wide in fiberglass where leak started"...

Then, next, you said, "No leaking happened till I flipped the thing to fill the tub with water. That's why I think it has more to do with the gasket but I could be all wet here"...

Please start from the beginning and explain when you first noticed the leak, where you noticed it, and what steps you took to correct it (sound like you replaced the gasket and drain assembly) and where it is leaking now. Finally, how does the mushy spot connect to the gasket?? Back to you, OK?

    Thanks...

    Hi Tom

Hey! I have to say that the manufacturer of this item won't be happy but like you said, Tom, in my 30+ years I've only run into 2 or 3 rotted gaskets and then I simply pulled them out from the front and replaced them with a $3.00 replacement gasket I get at any home improvement store.

I simply can't understand why anyone would purchase this thing??

    Have a good day!

Ok, about a week ago the family room ceiling had a blister in the paint. So my husband poked his finger up there and guess what a leak. He cut away the dry wall and it was the tub drain. So since we can se both the top and bottom of this problem we can diagnose pretty well. We only really seemed to get leaking with baths not with showers. But only as the tub was draining. The leak was definitely around the drain assembly. We bought a new drain (sorry I don't know all the technical terms). The brass fitting that screws down from the top and the tool to replace that. Also since the old gasket came out in about six pieces we purchased that new. However the new gasket it slightly smaller in outer circumfrence (could that be the issue dif is 1/8 in). We since removed assembly and gasket. Gasket has plubmers putty marks all round except one small area (problem? )
    Ok hope this helps.
    Thanks sooooo much

Don any of the other experts agree that this is a rip-off? In my book anybody stupid enough to fill their bathtub to overflowing is 3 cans short of a six-pack. Cheers, Tom

    Hi Sheila

Boy, I don't know what's going on around here, but now someone went and combined your original thread (that was already hijacked by Tboz) with this long thread about tub overflow gaskets... nothing to do with your original question about the tub SHOE gasket... ;)

All I can tell you without being there is that you need lots of putty up top at the strainer, lots of pipe dope on the tub strainer threads (going into tub shoe) and you need to have the tub shoe gasket up tight to the tub when you strongly tighten the tub strainer into place. Be sure NOT to displace the tub shoe gasket when tightening...

Let me know what happens, OK?

Renters fill the tub up all the time. If you have multi-family rental property, you need these. Maybe not every renter is bad, but enough are. It only takes one call from the renter below and you wish you had them.

So you're saying that I should replace a working gasket with this because why? It's better? Stops leaks better? What?
Tell me something that would make ne trash my working gasket for one of these.
My opinion is that these gaskets, right along with Rid-X and Septic Savior are scams based on "Scare advertising " Prove me wrong. Regards. Tom

I just bought one of these. There is no conspiracy here. If it's just a $3 gasket you're changing, then it's a rip-off, but if you have kids who constantly take showers, you will need the Ultimate Gasket. Why? Even a good overflow gasket traps water between the steel tub and the gasket. Eventually, the tub will rust and leak.

Without this gasket, I would have had to hire a plumber to rip out and replace my tub. What's that job cost, including drywall and tile work?

This $20 gasket has saved me thousands of dollars. I wished I had thought of it...

I'm just a customer who has saved thousands of dollars by purchasing one of these ultimate gaskets.

To all the professionals claiming this is a conspiracy or "Scare advertising", let me ask you what you would suggest to the customer if they called you for a job where the tub had rusted around the overflow gasket and started leaking? Would you replace the overflow gasket, knowing that a new gasket will not seal around the rust? Would you suggest replacing the tub? Of course you guys would, that makes you thousands of dollars.

Instead, you could have installed something for $20 and save your customers thousands, but why would you want to do that?

I don't know bolocop. If I had a call on a tub that rusted out the overflow I'd be giving the drain a very hard look. It's been my experience that the drain will rust out before the overflow will.
Got a magic gasket fir that? / Replace the tub? You bet I would. Regards, Tom

Clearly Bolocop works for or is related to the people making this silly device!

To suggest that people that devote hundreds of hours a year with NO COMPENSATION "Would you suggest replacing the tub? Of course you guys would, that makes you thousands of dollars"... clearly misses how things work around here!

The device is nonsense... glad to argue it hard core if they want!

Then you must have lots of paperwork to back up your claim. So-- Let's see your proof,

Rusty old tubs nee3d to be replaced. It's far more likely a tub will rust around the drain before it will rust around the overflow. And what sort of idiot fills a tub so full it runs out the overflow? Cheers, Tom

I am a renter with a manager who has for years ignored my request to inspect and replace the gasket on my overflow drain. I am not an idiot, but water does sometimes splash from my showers into the overflow and my kids do sometimes splash water into the drain as well. All the water that finds its way anywhere near the drain comes down directly onto the downstairs bathroom ceiling. I bought this product because I have no experience changing an overflow gasket myself and am not authorized to bring in my own plumber (nor do I want to pay one when my rent should cover these kind of minor repairs). I needed a fool-proof product that I could instal easily that would be sure to work. There is no more leak and I am a happy camper. And before I am accused of being a shill, I am a high school teacher with no affiliation to this company. Just a person with a specific problem that found a simple solution.
