afaroo - it seems to be leaking just a bit at #2 but was leaking at #3 until I tightened it last just a little bit more.

    afaroo

That is called the packing nut, you can tighten a little more make sure to use TWO pair of pliers or wrenches, you also can tighten the #3 a little more if needed, good luck.

    Pinklady:

If you have a replacement shutoff then maybe you can enlist the help of a friend and get that shutoff removed and replaced!

Glad toilet is up and running though!

Maybe I better just make sure I am understanding where to put both wrenches! I thought MassPlumber meant to put one on the actual knob and the other on the nut right behind it. Now I'm wondering if I am doing it correctly.

    Hi Pinklady:

If packing nut is leaking then you want to hold the BODY of the valve with one plier and tighten the packing nut with the other plier.

If trying to remove the shutoff so you can replace the shutoff you will hold the BODY of the shutoff with one plier and the NUT in back of the shutoff with the other plier. Then you will try to reuse the old nut. If reusing the nut is unsuccessful then you will need to buy a handle puller/compression nut/ferrule remover...
