Is it wise to connect an ice maker to the washing machine water source

    Hi Nancy.

I see no reason why you can't connect to the washing machine water source. As a plumber I would want the washing machine setup left alone (unless not needed) and I would like to see a separate shut off installed off a tee fitting cut into the washing machine cold water pipe for the ice maker. I would NOT install a SADDLE VALVE (google images on this) that usually comes with the 1/4" tubing. I would NOT install plastic tubing... copper is always best and will never give you a problem.

    Back to you...

Make sure you tap into the cold water side.

I agree with you John, but some people actually insist on using hot water for ice maker. Cold water is cleanest but gives foggy/cloudy ice cubes. Hot water, on the other hand, has less oxygen as a result of being heated, minerals can precipitate out and float to the bottom of the hot water heater, AND the result is crystal clear ice cubes. Funny stuff, huh?

Either works, but I stick with cold water myself in most cases, but definitely have a few customers that go for the clear cubes!

Now that is interesting to know. Thanks. It does make sense.
