Hi, I need to replace a Bladder tank in my home. I have a well system with a submersible pump. The copper connections seem quite simple with regard to replacing etc. However, I've done some on-line research and the more I read the more difficult the installation seem to be.
My question is about expansion tanks and pressure relief valves. I don't believe my current old tank has them. What do I need to know? Also, I'd like to add a Whole House Water Filter to the mix. Should that be added before or after the tank, and how will that affect the pressure in the house? - I haven't bought anything yet, I'm in preliminary stages of research.

I think you're referring to a water heater and not a pump. Your bladder tank acts as a expansion tank, (see image) and the pressure's controlled by the pump control box.

Add your filter after the bladder tank. If the filter loads up and isn't replaced or cleaned it will lower boith the volume and pressure to the house. Build a bypass around the filter so it can be serviced without shutting off the house service. Good luck, Tom

Thanks for the fast response. OK, the Filter goes after the Bladder tank, got it (makes Sense). So, am I to assume that replacing the existing tank and it's connections (both Copper & Electrical) is all that needs to be done? I'm not taking on this project lightly, but it sounds easy enough.

There are recommendations out there about adding a PRV to any well system, all on the idea that if your switch sticks on, you don't want pressure in the tank building up to a dangerous level. They are cheap and easy to install. I would do it. As SB stated, you certainly would not need an expansion tank. That is would have the FEW benefits of being on a well.

If you have a moderate skill level with plumbing, then adding a tank is not difficult at all.
