Mine is a joint family and we live in a duplex. The house which we live in is being haunted from many years.The spirit that dwells in my house marks its presence by noises, for example: sound of footsteps on the staircase, jingling of keys, banging on the window, knocking on door etc, all this after 12 in the night and goes on till 3.30 or 4.00 in the morning.
The other day when I was sleeping alone in the house, around 10 AM I heard a knock on the fridge that's placed in my bedroom, it was loud enough to wake me up from my deep sleep, when I turned around I could sense that I was not the only one in the bedroom, could feel a presence which cannot be described. All this is bearable but the other day in the middle of the night I could feel a heaviness on my whole body I could not move or speak when I tried to scream aloud to call my dad. My whole body was paralysed for a few minutes and I found it hard to breathe. The same was reported by my elder sister and younger brother on few occasions which I did not believe at that point in time. But when the same happened to me I really got too scared, nowadays I cannot sleep peacefully.
My question is can the spirit possess the human body, can it possess any one of us in the home? How can we get rid of it [tried all types of prayers by priests still nothing happened, it gets worse]Can the spirit harm us in anyway, can it bring ill health or misfortune?

I do truly believe in spirits and many years ago had a similar experience of waking up paralyzed and sensing someone, who was up to no good, in the room with me. I was absolutely alone in the house at the time.

This was a new house, but the land the house was on, I found out, was a former village of 2 or 3 houses in the late l800s.

I don't believe though that spirits can harm you, or bring misfortune, they are benign as they should be. They are basically souls that had a purpose before they died and are still trying to accomplish it. They don't know they are dead.

The church still performs excorsisms and maybe you should look into that, rather then be fearful. I hope you do get rid of this annoying spirit, but don't forget, some of them are quite friendly and helpful. Or, maybe you should try to communicate with it to see if you can help it pass over to where it should be. Ouija boards are quite helpful and not dangerous as some may think, I have one and use it from time to time successfully.

We too live in a home with spirits.Alot of them.The thing to do is not be afraid of them.They want to communicate.I unlike Tickle feel the Ouija Board is very dangerous.You think you have problems now; Mess with that board and things will get a lot worse.With the board you can bring the bad spirits in and they're harder to get rid of than the passive ones.Get some holy water and go in every part of the house.Sprinkle even in your closets.Say prayers asking them to go into the light and be at peace.Remind them that they are deceased.Plus sprinkle salt around the whole outside of your place.Good luck!And remember they can't hurt you.You'll do great.

If you pray and have faith in God, the spirit can not do anything to you at all, It is often hard to get rid of a spirit if there is someone else in a home that is inviting the spirits back in, or if they believe they have some legal claim to be in the house. What are your paretns saying, about the noise?

Thank you for your replies. Maybe some spirits are friendly but the one that's in my home is sought of mischievous. Its very clear that it wants to scare us. Sometimes it calls our names in a familiar person's voice when nobody is around the house, there's also moaning and crying sounds from time to time. When we went for advise from local psychics they say that an aunt of mine has cast black magic on the house so that we do not live in peace, for what reasons I don't know, we can't even confront her without appearing foolish. I'll try norcalimama's suggestion of sprinkling holy water and salt, hope something changes and we get to live peacefully in our house. Thanks.

If there are some in the house, still OK with the spirits being there, it is hard to get them out. Also check the entire house for symbols, or markings of a territory around your home.

Even my parents don't have an answer to this, my dad is the only person in the home not to have experienced anything spooky till date. On the other hand my mom was complaining as recently as yesterday of noises in the verandah around midnight. My dad just advises me and my siblings not to speak about the spirit much because it may manifest itself more of its presence. I do night shifts and go home only by 4 AM, even at this time I could hear crying sound on the staircase, this really scares me. What if it attacks me or shocks me with any appearances, how can I protect myself? I have faith in god but still nothing stops it. And father what do you mean by looking for symbols and territory markings, how can I recognize it? Even if I recognize what to be done with it, please advise. Thank you.

Your dad is right, don't speak about the spirit and he won't hold sway. It may work if you ignore his presence, turn your back on him, he won't like that, but it may make him go elsewhere.

What country do you live in?

Sometimes by knowing what country the person asking the question is from, it helps people to be able to answer questions because there can be certain customs in a country that may be related to the problem. And, the people answering the questions then may know about the customs. You did say something about an aunt of yours who has cast black magic?

But I just believe that the spirits shoul be operating on some common principles, which does not change from country to country if am not wrong.

When I was growing up my house was to haunted there was a particular room that was always cold and around midnight you can hear footsteps and door opening and closing so I know what your going trough have you tried holy water around the rooms and praying our father you can turn on a candle of St. Michael he is the angle of demons. I've had the same experience myself and it feels embarrassing as quite a lot of people don't believe in this sort of thing. My last house had a ghost which I also never believed in until I manage to capture the image of it moving around at the end of my bed with a mobile phone recorder. Two people had told me they felt the presence but it was my 5 yr old son that always talked to her and told me about the lady that visits him at night to play. I experience it getting into my bed and cuddling me and I reacted in the same way as you described, it also held me down and kissed my cheek one night. I was terrified even though it never hurt me I just never thought ghost exisited. I had 2 different partners whist I lived there and whilst with both when there was a slight argument it seemed to show themselves to them and stop them from coming into the same room. I feel it was actually protecting me from anybody that was a threat as my current partner of 2 years never see or had the ghost shown to him. We heard noises and extremely loud bangs that couldn't be explained, and the constant sound of footsteps waling around upstairs but only my son was up there and also sound asleep. I did panick when I had recorded the image as she was doung her hair and you could clearly see the colour and style of her outfit, she walked out of my room and walked down the stairs. The next morning my son ran into our room and told me what a pretty dress she was wearing, describing the colour identically and then he told me she had asked him to say hello to mummy and that she loved me! I was gobsmacked and he then added sh'ell be back to see him at 11pm that night. I rang the local vicar who came straight to my house and blessed the room she visited and straight away I felt a peace and cried, as I felt sad. The hosue wa still and quiet and my son was very upset she didn't return. But since I have moved but find some nights I seem to waken but not completely but I know I am not alone and try to move or shout my partner's name but all I can do is moan, he knows that's a call from me to wake me as I feel unsafe. It has never hurt me and I don't think it would've but when you have never experience it before it is scary. I've been told that it is an ability to sense a presence but it is hard to explain until you go through it yourself, I think you shuld ring your vicar as they are very understanding. To tell you the truth, you probably don't have a haunting. Sometimes older houses or apartments have what are called remnants of the past families that lived there. The energy fields of these past families were sucked into the walls of the house or apartment and manifest themselves like clockwork at certain times during the day or night. If you have ever heard "If these walls could talk" well, now you are actually hearing them talk.

Another explanation: The native Americans believed there are entities called Thoughts. What could have started as a simple leaving from a past resident has now become powerful because of the amount of fear and thought you have fed it. These entities survive off your fear of them so if you starve it of its life force you no longer have an entity. Do not fear the entity and remember that you are the owners of this house and you are also the one who created this entity.

Your father was right in advising you to just ignore it. Haven't you wondered why he hasn't had an encounter with it?
Also remember that some psychics are very likely to become controlled by the very entity they are trying to tell you about so be careful with whom you ask for a reading or advice.

Have a investigator look into it, or as I have said before get a digital camera and take pictures where you think the ghosts might be or the "hot spots"

Ok a more simplified way to get rid of your spirit is to simply tell it to leave. Be nice, but assertive; tell it that, "this is our home now and we no longer wish your presence here so please leave or pass on." I have found some personal accounts on the internet that you might find relevant or interesting:
I experience pressure on my chest.

I have seen a documentary titled "The Entity", in which a man was possessed by one of these spirits. He frequently tried to harm himself and his wife- they had to sleep in separate rooms. But this was a very rare occasion. I doubt that you, or your family would be in any real danger, other than fear of going to sleep.

This thing happened to me before. I was in my livingroom sleeping and I woke up from a noise and I couldn't move at all. So I tried to scream but when I opened my mouth it hurt me. Then I started to hear footsteps to the left of me and I couldn't turn my head to look. I was like that for a hour. I think the time was 3 a.m. when I woke up.

Also one time when I was a kid I saw a shadow in my kitchen and it wasn't anybody in my family cause nobody in my family was that tall and skinny and it was moving I wasn't imagining it.

It gets worse because they want you to stop praying... when did it start to happen?? Did anyone of your family, friends had played with Ouiji board in the house or performed any kind of magic? I found this site simply by googling up stuff that has happened to me on a few occasions.
I have the same experience as Vanitavelu and some others. And even though I believe in Paranormal, I have always dismissed it as only my vivid imagination. Or so others told me to.
I experienced couple of times heaviness on the body and the paralyzed feeling in the night. Once I was about to fall asleep, when I suddenly realised I not alone in the room and then it happened. On other occasion it woke me. There are times when I don´t feel the pressure but am still kind of paralysed and I heard voices next to my bed.
Problem is there are no other signs of haunting and it happened in different places.
In different countries even.
I also know that ghosts come with feeling cold. I very often fell extremely cold, I get goose bump so fast and so much it physically hurts. Problem is no one else in the room does.

Yes it can possess you and take over your body to control it and use it to kill someone my only opinion and this will help a lot trust me take a board and write the whole alphabet on it the take a wine glass and set it on the middle of the board ask the spirit questions also add yes and no to the board then 1 through 100 on the board if the spirit answers ten keep asking questions at the end ask it nicley to leave if this doesn't work replace all doors and floor and ever thing because the spirit might be stuck to one of those items!

I also forgot to add don't press on the wine glass to hard and have a sheet of paper and a pen ready because your will need to write done each letter the wine glass goes over to under stand what he is saying or call the Ghost Hunters the will help a lot FOLLOW ALL OF THESE TIPS one of them will help!

The real lady that inspired Ghost Whisper says ghosts hate sea salt and she also says to tell them to go to the light. Poltergist ghosts are the most likely type ghost to try and harm you. I don't think that it will actually hurt you if it hasn't been getting progressively aggressive or if it is a demonic spirit. It could be a demonic spirit rather than a ghost if your aunt did cast a spell.
Don't use a Ouija board even as a last resort, they can bring more bad spirits and even cause harm to you.

This sounds like a poltergiest (noisy ghost who does not bring peace). I once had a poltergiest and I sat down and channeled it and told it that its time is over and that it is invading me and my families house and that I wish for it to leave because there is nothing it can do here.and I have had no trouble since.

The best thing to do is face the "spirit(s)" head on. Look for them and go after them. Yell at them to come hither. Talk to them.

When nothing happens, you'll know that there are no such things as spirits or ghosts. Your duplex is just fine.

I'm such a fan of logic this (paranormal forum), might be the wrong place for me to hang out. I just know I'll wind up offending someone.

Why aren't there such things as spooks, gobblins and ghosts? I don't know the answer to that. I just know that no one has ever been able to verify their existence (or any other paranormal entity), in the entire history of man. There's a reason for that... THEY DON'T REALLY EXIST!

I live I a house on old farm land , and a clair-voient told us that we are living on a spirit walkway. My mum recently had a phsycic man over and it described some of my family and some we do not know about. Recently we have been having a lot of strange occurrences such as banging , footsteps a sighting of a black dog and several shadows around the house. we have one maybe one spirit in our home and it seems that it is feeding off the free when we have more then 5 people in our home it desides to start showing and if someone shows fear it does it somemore me and my mom isn't afraid of the spirit cause we know if we don't show fear then it can't really harm us but here lately for the past month and a half its showing itself more and more I don't honestly know what to do cause of it all we mainly hear from the spirit is my name and no one is around when we hear my name... and also it seems like everywhere I go my mom calls me or someone else calls me telling me they heard a voice asking where I am at

I had a spitit that followed me everywhere I moved. Scared the mess out of me and the kids. I got used to it and realized it didn't want to hurt us. It was fun when people would visit and say they didn't believe me and then something would start floating in the air or whatever it wanted to do to show off.
One day my daughter told it that it wasn't nice to scare little children. Haven't seen or heard from it since. Kind of miss the surprise of what it would next.
