Do we have a ghost visiting us?
Several things have happened that make me think we have a visitor. Here is a list of things that has happened on more than one occasion:
TV changes stations on its own and I am the only one in the house. We live in the country so not much chance of a prank
Candles relighting themselves after being out for 5-10 minutes
Touch light in bedroom coming on by itself.. not just one level but two levels
Son has seen a person walking through hallway with a white house robe on just to find out no one is there
Light smoky like shadows at the end of my bed
    Orbs in photos
Several other things have happened but these are the most prodominent ones that stick out in my mind
    What do you think?

    Hello xxbreezy,

I cannot say that I am a believer or non believer in the existence of ghosts, I am simply very open minded. Neither am I an expert in this field, but what you describe would make me feel that further investigation would be in order.

How much do you know about the history of the house you live in? It could be an idea to try to out something about its past and its past residents. If there has been someone living in the house that could fit the description of the person in the white robe.

Some of the things you describe could possibly be explained. The touch light going on and the TV changing channels could be due to a fault. If you see the smoky shadows at night it could be because you are only half awake and it is simply your imagination. The same applies to the seeing of the spectre in the robe, especially if your son is quite young. Their imaginations are normally quite sharp. The orbs showing in your photos could be down to a fault in the camera, unless of course they have appeared since the photos have been developed and framed.

I am certainly not saying that any of these explanations is the case, but it is probably the kind of thing which an genuine psychic investigator might consider.

What does intrigue me is the candles lighting up again after they have been extinguished for several minutes. I can't think of an explanation for this.

If, and I only say if you are experiencing a paranormal occurrence and it is worrying you, I would suggest you look for a genuine psychic investigator and let them know what is happening. They will be far better equipped to advise you and let you know what they think. If they feel it worthwhile, they may even offer to conduct some research in your home.

The good thing about your experiences is that what is happening does not appear to be malevolent.

I do wish you every success in solving this problem. Please get back to us and let us know what you find out.

Thank you for answering. The only thing I know about the house is that our landlord who lives next door, well... his mother lived here until she died. If or whatever this is, seems to be friendly and associated around me. My son is 30 yrs old and just moved here about 8 mo ago and was staying with us for awhile. He actually saw the women in the white robe twice and BEFORE we told him about the things that have been happening. Also, the pictures were taken at Christmas last year on my daughters digital camera and not all the pics had orbs in them. They seemed to be placed around my grandchildren. They were of different sizes and density. But, the white smoky image I saw at the end of my be also appeared in one of those pictures. Still... it could be the camera. The touch light and the TV are new so not sure what that was about. Also I might mention its odd because things may not happen for awhile. Then when we might be discussing things that have happened here, it seems to start happening again... usually the same things. Kind of like someone is saying... No... I'm here don't forget me! LOL... One time, we were playing a poker game and there we're just 3 of us playing. I KNOW we dealt chips out for only 3 players. When the game was over, we divvied up the chips again only to discover the were chips enough for the 4th player. Anyway thanks for answering... its very interesting though because I was never totally convinced about ghost but now feel there may be something to it!

    Hi again xxbreezy,

Thanks for getting back and for the extra info.

I think virtually everyone has their share of strange occurrences, I certainly know I have.

To be honest if it was me experiencing these phenomena I would want to try to get to the bottom of it.

I believe you can find several organisations who will investigate your experiences with an open mind, subjectively and scientifically.

If you do eventually solve this I would love to know.

Thank you again. Its not something that I will probably investigate much further. Of course, unless something more predomidant happens. I'm sure like you said, everyone has freaky stuff happen from time to time. If nothing else, its entertaining to talk about or explain to those who don't know yet... lol!!

Just wanted the readers to know that out of curiosity I put a hand held tape recorder in my bedroom to see if I could hear anything. Most everything seems to revolve around that room or me. On the second day of recording, OMG... I heard what sounded like a man!! Kind of like when you get the wind knocked out of you 2 grunting type sounds OMG... this total freaked me out! I guess I really wasn't expecting to hear anything!! What you think?

I'm no expert by any means on the paranormal, but I've had more than my share of experiences with things that... well, can't be explained any other way than there was a ghost or at least another presence causing things to happen. Let me say that if all you have going on are the things you've described then (in my opinion) it doesn't sound like you have anything threatening, but definitely be aware of the happenings in your house and if you notice sudden changes in "its" behavior, then I would suggest having a priest of some sort come over and check it out.
I'll share a quick story with you: when I was stationed in the UK, our second house was a converted schoolhouse (still connected by an archway to the church that was converted into our landlord's house). We had a ghost there and we named him William. He was able to 'move' between the way the house was as we were living in it to occupying areas in the house from when it was a school. The school was one-story, but our house was two-story. Sometimes he would play on the stairs (could hear him on the stairs and giggling) and sometimes he would walk through the door to the washroom (the door and washroom existed when it was a school, but not when we lived there). After awhile he basically stopped, either that or we were so used to it that we didn't notice anymore. At no time, though, did he ever actually move anything. I could tell you a story about that, but I'll save it for another time! :)

It sounds like a polterguist, and evil spirit, it is important not to get scared because they can use your fear to posses you, I hope you believe in God because God really is your only hope of freeing your-self, I suggest try getting a cat, evil spirits are afraid of cats for some reason, it worked for me, and a friend of mine, don't try to run from it, it will more then likely fallow you. Good luck, God bless and protect you. Your newest friend Beverly Novak

Thanks Beveryly and AF Guy!! I loved your ghost story AF. Would be a treat to actually see some real activity here... I think... as long as its nice!! LOL Anyway, we downloaded wavepad and took out the background noise... basically cleaned up the tape. Through different sets of heaphones, our ghost sounded like 2 different things. Once it was cleaned up, it was the same noise... no baby though. I imagine the quality of each head set had something to do with the different sounds. We actually figured out what the ghost was saying which was... "Give Up". Not sure if I can put it on here or not. If I find a place to put it I will let you know. Thanks again.

Thanks for you post... checking it out now. A few things have happened since this post which seem to fall into the guidelines of a haunting. First of all, I wasn't feeling well last week and while I was lying in my bedroom watching TV, my bedroom opened by itself about 6-8 inches. This door sticks terribly. I mean you have to almost pound it open because it sticks so bad. So not much chance that it just "came open" on its own. A few days after that I went into my bedroom to make my bed and pick up a few things and smelled a strong odor of tobacco... sweet smelling. I though a cigar but my husband suggested a pipe... most likely. I had no candles burning at all in my home at that point. Then, night before last, even though things have been fairly quiet lately, my husband and I we watching a movie in the living room. I have a candleier, electric candle like you use at Christmas, in my living room picture window. All of a sudden it was going on and off. I thought maybe the bulb was loose so I checked it and it was fine. I also though maybe the bulb was getting ready to blow but its still working fine 2 days later. I had asked our ghost to quit messing around and the candle blink one more time. It has stayed on ever since. You'd think if it was getting ready to blow out... it would have done it by now. Anyway, thanks for the information and what do you think about all this?

These encounters are semi convincing but consider this? The smell of smoke could most likely have been your husband. With your door, it could have had a day where it felt like co-operating. This is not uncommon. With your lights flickering, was there a heavy wind storm or something? It could have been just natural. Lights do tend to flicker randomly.

Don't be scared I am sure nobody is trying to hurt you. I have found that when this sort of thing happens they are trying to tell you something!

Do you know of any mediums that can put this to rest for you ?

Thanks for your response. My husband wasn't home the day I smelled to odor of a cigar or pipe. As a matter of fact, he doesn't smoke either. I do agree with what you are saying about the other things. Just with the other things going on... especially with the door, there was no wind storm and that is the only time it opened on its own. All could be coincidence I imagine

No I don't know any mediums but I know I am not in any danger. Actually, its kind of entertaining to what may happen next... if anything. Not sure what, if anything, something or someone is trying to tell me as we have only live here in the house and this state for less than four years. I don't know a lot of people here as I don't work outside the home anymore but either way... I do not have a fear of what does happen here. Thanks for your response also Louie

Ok those other experiences are very convincing. Yes you definitely have a ghost in your premises and it sounds like it wants to share your home. Maybe there will be a day when you can speak personally with the ghost, may it be a séance, Ouija board, anything.

Yes that would be interesting to say the least. Have not had any experience visually either... just what we have picked up on recordings and the strange happenings around here. Hopefully, he/she will show itself soon.

    Hi,
I start with the orbs showing up on the photos. This has been shown, on numerous occasions, to be a giltch that is peculiar to digital cameras and does not tend to show up on optical camera photos taken at the same time.
As for the rest of the things that are happening, one or two of them could be explained mundanely (the TV for one) and have only taken a greater significance when looked at in conjunction with the other things that are happening.
No as for these other things. It does sound as if you have something going on there, but working from a distance it's hard to say what. The figures in the hallway and at the foot of the bed do sound like you have something visiting you, but whether they are one and the same thing, I'm not sure. The woman in the house robe sounds like (and from what I can tell from here) some kind of ghost and if she has made no overtly hostile moves towards any of you it might be beset to leave her be for the timebeing (if it helps, think of her and treat her like a lodger), as I get the feeling that if you leave her alone she'll leave you alone. The other things sound like you have at least on prankster in the house, and I do not mean a physical one. Many things that get taken for ghosts are actually nature and elemental spirits, some of which have a wicked, and annoying, sense of humour.
Most of these spirits don't mean any harm but are just playful (especially if they are not being taken notice of). Once they are known some will just leave on their own accord (the fun has gone out of it for them), but others might stay. These ones quite often will let you know something they like, so if you get the strange impulse to leave something (a drink, sweets/candies, tobacco etc.) in a strange place, like under a piece of furniture, in the bottom of a cupboard or under a stone in the garden for instance, this may be them giving you hints. If this happens it can be a good idea to do it as the ones who do this, and stay, will put off many of the more malign of their kind from coming to the house. Note that if you do this it is best to leave them some of whatever they have indicated on a reasonably regular basis (it doesn't have to be large amounts).
If you are not comfortable with this you may need to get someone in, who knows what they are doing, to get rid of them (be advised, most of these entities, nowadays, take little notice of the clergy of most of the major religions). Though this will get rid of the ones that are there now, it doesn't mean that others won't come in to fill the gap (unless the person you get to do it is very good at their job).
I'm sorry if I can't give you any names of anyone who can do this, if you deicide to do it that way, as I don't personally know anyone I can recommend in your area (I'm on a different continent).
Hope this is of some help
    Bye for now.

Thank you very much for your time and interest. Yes... we don't feel like what or whoever this is, means us any harm. We have since my first posting, have talked with our landlord and just can't connect anything that's going on to his family. His family has owned this property from the beginning and has only had like 3 renters with one of them being a family member. We realized, and not sure why sooner, that we live about 4 miles from the Aversboro Battle Ground during the Civil War in North Carolina. We are thinking now that possible our "ghost" may be related to that. The entity my son saw in the hallway on two different occasions, could not be determined to be a man or a women. But... given the Civil War time-frame, it could be a man, as during that time, they did where "nightshirts" and wigs. This may explain the sweet cigar odor in my bedroom... thinking a man would be smoking a pipe or cigar rather that a women. I have heard many people say now that the Touch Lights do have a glitch... coming on by theirself or having shorts. So I will concede on that but the TV only has me concerned for one reason. Both times it changed channels, I was in the shower and the TV had changed to channel 50 both times. You'd think if it were a glitch, it would be random channels not the same channel. Also, I'm not sure if I posted the audio of our ghost on here or not I will check but it says or what I think it says is... "give up". Since then, we have not gotten any "word" audios just some bumping, clanging... that sort of thing. Again thanks for your help and I will post the audio on here if its not already.

    Hi me again,
Your mentioning Aversboro Battle Ground got me thinking that, depending on the direction, four miles might be a reasonable, for that time, distance form the battle for a field hospital (possibly).
If your visitor is from the battle the most likely transport mediums for it moving with you to your present house are either in a piece of memorabelia from the battle (or associated camps), any other piece of militaria or in an item of the time (these are not the only things it could just the most likely).
One of the other people who answered your question mentioned poltergeists. I don't think you have one of these ans most seem to be associated with addolescents (mostly girls) and, in genreal, only last for a relatively short period and are far mor violent in nature than whoever/whatever is in your house.
A similar situation to yours happened to some friends some years ago. Many of the things that you are experiencing happened to them (things moving, waffy electrics etc.0, but their ghost had the habit of hiding things, many of which were in use at the time and had only just been put down.
They asked me and my then partner to go round and see if we could do anything. After half an hour , or so, I picked up on the presence of a man who told me he had been a courier in our Civil War and he had been killed by the enemy (Cromwell's troops) in such a way that no one knew who had been killed. This left him in the position where the Royalist troops who were waiting for his message thought he had deserted. Once he told me/us this he left as all he wanted was for someone to know what had happened.
It may be the same for your visitor or it could be that it was his/her will to stay around and may have become lonely over the yeaes and just wants company (it happens).
As for any other spirits that may be there my past advice stands.
Concerning the sweet smelling smoke, in past times a greater percentage of women cmoked pipes or cigars than do now (that percentage is possibly for the camp followers of an army) so your visitor could still be a woman, although the smell still favours a man (say 70/30).
For your light bulb, think yourself lucky, when certain things happen around me they tend to explode after they flicker. On this topic (the electrics) think on the old addage "Once is an occurance. Twice is coincidence and thrice is a pattern." (paraphrased a little from various versions). If the things happened in a short time frame then this works, but if there is quite a gap between each occurrence then start counting from one again. Your TV may have a faulty circuit that is triggered by certain power surges (uncommon but not impossible), so that every time you get that kind of surge it changes to a specific channel (a rare, but mundane explanation). The way you described the candle light behaving I can't think of a mundane explanation for that scenario.
On the whole it does sound like you have a benign ghost or spirit in your house (possibly both). If you feel comfortable with it then leave things as they stand (barring any changes).

We don't have any memoriablia from the battle ground but just out of curiosity, we looked up the history of the battle. I have named my ghost Robert, just a the first name that came to me after the cigar/pipe incident. There was only one Robert in the battle that we found, not to say there was more. It was General Robert Hoke. I'm sure its just a coincidence but had to chuckle a bit. Things have been really quiet lately so as you suggested, if anything happens, will consider it "incident one". What usually happens is that things will be quiet for awhile... then bam things start happening again. It has been too windy here to get any EVP's so when things calm down I may do some recording again. We don't plan to do anything at this time to rid ourselves of our ghost until as you say, barring any changes. Right now its just little stuff that happens basically to let us know he/she is still around. If anything new happens, I will post again. Thanks for you time and interest.

Update on "Do we have a ghost visiting us?" on pg2
Its been a while since I have posted because our ghost, who we named Robert, has not show himself in any way. When I first named our ghost "Robert", I had no reason at all. That was just the first name that came into my mind. The paranormal activity that has happened in our home is posted here under "Do we have a ghost visiting us?" ( I think) Because of this activity. Candles relighting themselves, strong odor of cigar or pipe, the ghost my son saw twice in our hallway dressed in nightclothes of the era, etc... I decided to get some history on our home. Only to find out that one family has owned this property since 1948. In no way could we make a connection to Robert and the property owners. I decided to get history on the ground we live on and found some interesting facts. This is why we think our ghost "attached" himself to us. We live about 4 mi or so from the Averasboro battleground in NC. The battle moved through our property in 1865. Major Gen. Robert F Hoke was held in high regard and moved quickly up the ranks in the confederant army. Sometime later, Hoke asked to be released from his position to help rebuild the south and died in NC in 1912 which was unrelated to the battle. In April 1865, in a farmhouse located in Orange county NC, Confederate Gen. Johnston and Union Gen. Sherman, met to discuss the surrender of the Confederate Army. All the "politics" of the surrender was decided in this farmhouse. The owners of the 325 acre farm was James and Nancy Bennett (spelled Bennitt back then). So, I am sure you are asking yourselves what this has to do with us\? This is why we think our ghost showed himself the us. Especially with the EVP that I recorded says... "Give Up". The reason is this... our last name is Bennett. Since we found out this information, "Robert" has not shown himself in any way. Was Robert just a lost soul? What was he wanting? We can only assume it was a little of both. Most likely confused by our name being the same and maybe looking for some kind of acknowledment. To read more about this story click on this link:

hi I don't know if you willl see this but I would like to share some of the ocurrences that I have been through and as you seem like an intelligent, reasonable person so I thought that I would prefer to bring it up here then somewhere else, but anyway as of a few months months ago I started getting a lot of strange things happening in my house such as doors slaming and opening, tvs turning on and of on random occasions ( normaly on channel 21) ,microwave turning on with the timer on 47 seconds footsteps altrough the night as well as on a few rare occasions things like the pantry and fridge opening, these things made me curous and a bit worried but not intimdated so I ignored them as a whole. Until I was in bed one night about to fall asleep when there was the sound of a lot of heavy items hitting the ground right next to my bed and as you could imagine this was terrifying so I turned my light on and my wardrob had opened and all the boxes that stored my possesions had fallen onto the floor at this time I wanted to leave the house but made myself stay and just go to sleep but the next morning I woke up to find all of my things back in the wardrob with the door closed. I know no one else did this while I was asleep as I was onlyone home due to my parents being overseas .and I don't know how to really explain this but ever since I was young I've felt like something peacefull has been watching ever me but now there's another dominating presence around which is quite intimadating. I don't know if this helps but some people say that ghost focus on adalecent teens so I'm a 16 year old male. Thank you for reading this
