Since I haven't been stupid enough to have a kid I don't want, I don't qualify for health care. The only way to find out if you have a disability is to go to a doctor, which requires health care.

I'm getting philosophical? Maybe I should go back to school for philosophy if the health care bill passes.

Why would the bill's passage discourage current health care workers? Seems like there would be an even bigger need for good people. The salaries and benefits would be less?

The salaries and benefits would be WAY less. There is already a nursing shortage, and we don't get paid near what we should. Not that I'm knocking having a job, mind you.

What you don't see are the behind-the-scenes. For example, we have a form of health care here in TN that is similar to what the bill proposes. What we have here are people going to L&D at 7 at night when they could have visited the doctor before 5. These costs are astronomical and we don't get paid for that. Our unit only gets paid for actual deliveries.

We have patients who come up to our unit for attention getting purposes only, but none of them are real insurance carrying people, but rather medicaid patients. Now, I'm not saying that all medicaid patients are like that, but we do have a high number of them that are.

I could go on and on about this as I am not only a nurse, but I reconcile the charges for every person who comes to our unit for anything. I have a meeting on Wednesday with the state and corporate auditors to discuss these charges. We lose almost 75% of our revenue to people that do not have private insurance.

It's a matter of opinion. The health care bill, if passed or not, is a matter of philosophical debate, in my opinion.

Wow! My niece just became an RN, and I got the impression she is pretty well-paid.

Your description of the nursing situation sounds almost identical at times to the library profession -- "people going to [the library] at 7 at night [and wanting to stay past closing at 9] when they could have visited [it] before 5... [people] who come up to [the library] for attention getting purposes only, but none of them are [card-carrying patrons], but rather [unincorporated residents who cannot check out books because they don't pay taxes to the library]." And we serve everyone at notoriously low salaries no matter what their needs or where they live.

    I feel for you!

It all depends if she is working in a for-profit or not-for-profit hospital and what her specialty is.

She's just a floor nurse, maybe at a church-run hospital (but not sure). It's a small-town, semi-rural area near the Quad Cities (Illinois-Iowa -- near Clough, in fact).

Where did your friend get this info?

The only two doctors I work for (they voted for Nobama) have decided to retire if this passes. Why? Because they will be required to perform abortions. Something they clearly don't believe in. It is against their beliefs as obstetricians and Christians.

We will be earning .50 on the dollar, there will be more patients than there are doctors, so the waiting list to get in to be seen will be significantly higher.

Look at what Alty is going through, how long it is taking her to be seen and diagnosed, that is what we are facing. Higher mortality rates due to fewer providers and longer wait lists to be seen for diagnostic treatments.

Medicare will suffer, the elderly who depend on this will have increased health costs while those that have babies to get a check will have decreased costs.

Look at it this way, those that have to pay for their health care, or a portion thereof, take better care of themselves, even if it's only $10 a visit.

I said she was watching the sessions on TV. She likes that stuff.

I thought the idea is that everyone will have to purchase an insurance plan or pay a penalty. Nothing is supposed to be free.

That's not all that's involved. OB/GYNs are supposed to be able to perform abortions whether they want to or not. The costs of health care will actually be increased for senior citizens, there is so much more, I could go into a diatribe, but we are already hijacking Alty's thread. :o

While I agree that we need to do something, the current plan will ruin us. Doctors will retire, nurses will retire, the shortage of medical professionals will leave us in a health care bind.

I'd like to read that email your friend sent you. I don't know anyone in my profession who is actually "for" this bill. We are afraid of it actually. If it passes, I will be going back to school for my masters to work in the legal field, yet again, as an expert witness.

They should not be forced to do that! There has to be more dialog about this.
Clearly we have many kinks to work out of this plan. The bottom line is health care for everyone. That is the goal.

That's the goal Artsy, but this is not the correct plan. The docs I work for will have to accept everyone, and do whatever procedure is necessary, including abortion.

My opinion is that we have to protect our elderly. They have worked all their lives to be able to enjoy the luxuries of life. They won't be able to do that with the current plan.

Artsy, if there's something going on and you want to talk about it, we're all here, I hope you know that.

I understand if you don't want to talk about it, but we worry about you. Just be safe, be healthy and most importantly, keep being you because we all love you.

I called him. He says my hemoglobin is slowly getting higher, so the iron pills are working.

Next step, keep the hemoglobin rising and then find out why I'm bleeding so I don't have to be on iron pills for the rest of my life. ;)

Complete physical on March 30 and then CT scan on April 6. I'm still waiting for an appointment for a colonoscopy. :(
