Our problem is overall selfishness and lack of morals or good judgment. We live in an "It's all about me" society. Everybody wants what they want, the feel they deserve to have anything they want and it does not matter what they do or who they harm to get it.

I remember what I meant by independence. It's the spirit of individualism, saying that I am an island and don't need help, and don't help others. That's what I meant.

But don't forget -- individualism can also be a good and positive thing, as individual self-reliance and liberty. That's what has made this country great (but has also created its woes when it has been used wrongly).
