Ben, both sides get such a slating. Seriously, have you heard much of anything good about conservatives in the past 8 years? We have one guest here who can't seem to speak to us without using the words "fascist," "haters" and "liars." After all the names I've been called the past 8 years I find it hard to have sympathy for any slating that liberals have been subjected to.
One thing your definition states is that "liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity" which is one the main areas in which I find justification in criticism of the left. I find it difficult to reconcile liberalism standing for individual rights when they want to take away my constitutional right to own a gun and protect my family and my property, my right to say something they may find offensive or as Hillary said during the primaries, "We're going to take things away from you for the common good."
I find it difficult to reconcile that liberalism stands for "equality of opportunity" while discriminating against conservative, Christian and pro-life groups on college campuses, enforcing speech codes and suppressing ideas and opinions that differ from their own. These are some of the reasons I give the left a good slating - that and the thin skin they so often display.
