How much time does an ex-employee have to sue?
A former employee who resigned, emailed us that he may intend to sue our company. He states that information about his personal status - wife left him, may be facing foreclosure -- may be discussed with other employees. This hasn't happened, although this person was very popular, and most everyone knew of his circumstances. Also, divorce, and foreclosures (if it happens), are part of the public record.

I heard that he may attempt to sue for slander, saying that we said he was mentally unstable.

How much time does he have to file a suit? I would like to find a job in another state and want to know if I'm out of the woods with this situation.

    Hello s:

It depends on your state law. But, it's probably around 3 to 4 years.
