Pipe schedule is mainly used for PVC pipes which defines the dimension and pressure rating of pipes. Mainly two types of schedule PVC pipes are used, Schedule 40 (standard)and 80(extra heavy). The schedule 40 is a standard dimension pipe with wall thickness 0.068 inches and pressure rating from 130 to 600 psi depending on pipe size whereas schedule 80 is extra heavy pipe with wall thickness of 0.095 inches and pressure rating from 250 to 850 psi depending on pipe sizes at 73.4 degree F.

Pipe schedule is an ASTM standard as msk stated, however it is used for most pipes that carry fluids (liquid, steam, etc) . Steel, pvc, etc are have schedule ratings.
