Ok I've been having irregular periods for a year now and nothing seems to help. They put me on birth control and it made it worse. Last month was the first normal period I've had in like 12 months and it was the month after I went off the birth control but this month is completely different. I've been bleeding for 8 days now but it's been on and off, one day it's heavy then it stops then it's heavy again. Then 3 days after the bleeding started I started getting farely big clots too and I never get clots. The clots are smaller now but still there. Some days I go through tampons every hour.. even supers, others I can go hours without changing it.

What could be going on??

I had a pregnancy test done at planned parenthood and I have an appt. June 16th for an ultrasound and other tests but I want an opinion at what it could be!

Well, to begin with, age is always a factor when it comes to periods. If you are young and just beginning your cycles it can take a few years for them to regulate. How long were you on birth control? That also is a factor. Women who are athletic may also have "disturbed" menstrual cycles.

When seeing the doctor you may want to have a hormone level test done as well as the ultrasound.

I'm 18 and my period was always regular up until last year. I've been on birth control since I had my daughter 3 years ago. I was on the mini pill, the patch, then the pill... the mini pill is the only one that didn't screw me up but that isn't as effective as the rest so they don't want to put me back on it.

Okay, sounds to me like your system has been out of whack because of the birth control. It can take up to a year for your period to regulate back to normal.

The ultrasound will rule out endometriosis, which can sometimes cause problems. But to me sounds more like birth control issues, which, in time, will clear themselves up.

However, remember that diet, exercise, and stress will add to these problems.

Having a child at 15 can greatly effect your cycle.. you were not even old enough for them to regulate. I would suggest talking to your OB-Gyn and find out what your options are.. There are treatments available.Just make sure you watch for anemia with that kind of heavy bleeding.. Talk to your dr about iron supplments if this becomes a regular issue.

Not old enough for them to regulate? I had my period for 3 years before I had my daughter. And yeah I know about the anemia... I'm already taking a multivitamin everyday to try and help with that and other things.

Stormy is right. Not old enough for them to regulate. It can take quite a few years for menses to regulate. I began mine at 13 and they were not regulated until I was almost 20. This is the reason some doctors use the birth control pill for girls that are not sexually active, to regulate periods.

Good to hear you are taking a multivitamin, make sure it has an adequate amount of iron.

J9 is correct also :) and then even when /IF they finally do become regular so many different factors can send you out of whack again,, gosh isn't it fun being a girl??
I finally had to have an ablasion because my red menace was so out of control. With each child it became so much more intense and extremely painful.

Haha yeah... my period has always been regular though up until recently. Before I had my daughter it was almost always regular... same with right after I had her. I could usually figure out the exact date I'd get it. But man these periods lately are enough drive someone crazy. I've gone through almost 3 boxes of tampons already... everytime I think I can use a smaller absobency it gets heavy again.

You need to go directly to the doctor, do not pass go, do not collect...

Well, that said, it sounds as though you may have a build up of menarch tissue and may require a D&C.
