I have a pill and I'm not sure what it is.
I found a pill in my boyfriends car and I'm not sure what it is. It is red and oblong and it has the markings L 217 on it. Does anyone know what pill this is?

Okay. So there have now been two different answers to the original question.

I do want to say that I am not trying to scold anyone who has answered here. That of course is not my place. It's just that I feel very strongly about identifying pills on a question and answer site. And, that I would hate to see someone give an answer about such a thing and then be incorrect about it.

When answering any questions concerning pill identification on this site, no matter how harmless the pill might appear to be to someone who submits an answer or even if they are correct in their answer, it is important to realize that identifying pills could have far reaching consequences for the person who is asking about the identification of the pill.

What if the person answering is wrong?

To my knowledge, we have no pharmacists participating on this site. Even if we did, without actually seeing a pill, how would a pharmacists truly be able to identify it? Maybe the description by the poster could be somewhat off. To identify a pill without seeing it would seem to be an irresponsible thing to do.

What if a pill has totally different ingredients and was manufactured in a different country and has the same markings as another one manufactured somewhere else? Maybe there is some standard around the world for pills, but maybe there isn't. Why take a chance?

I won't apologize for my answer here. I just think that we need to be aware of the possible consequences for the answers that we give.

I do apologize for jumping on this particular question. It does appear to be a harmless question with also helpful answers. But, I myself, am not sure of the answer. So, now you have another answer. That is, that I'm not sure of the answer! See how this could go? This just seemed like an appropriate time for me to vent on the subject, since I care very much about this site and it's success because I find it to be an invaluable resource of people who are experts in certain fields who volunteer their time to answer questions. Also, because this site is so well moderated.

I think that the best thing to do with people who ask about identifying pills is to refer them to Pill Identifier - Drugs.com or, direct them to take it to a pharmacy to be identified. Then no one here will have to have it "hanging over their heads" as to whether they have given the most definitive answer to the question.

I hope that my answer is appreciated. Although the subject of answering about identifying pills has had extensive discussion on this site, the subject is going to keep popping up from time to time.

I just want to preface that I'm not trying to get down on you sisterjane and I know that you mean well, and I also encourage your continued use of this site. But, the fact that you have just used the words "hopefully this is the same pill" lends some credence to what I have stated above. I hope that you understand. I used to do the same thing with identifying pills on this site until someone posted something like I have. It really made me think.

I wouldn't answer if I didn't know for sure... and if your stupid enough to pick a pill off the ground and take it not knowing what it is OR relying on people from the internet or the internet itself to tell you what it is... your dumb. Pills found should always be thrown out... you don't know the exp date... what it is... or any of that. Take pills your doctor gives you. You know the ones that have the name of the stuff on the side of the bottle... and your name also!

I actually take L 217's or OVERTHECOUNTER TYLENOL all the time. Higher mgs in one pill because I hate taking pills to start with.

Agreed, it's sort of my hope that people don't actually take these medications that are found but simply want to make sure a friend or family member isn't taking any sort of "recreational drugs" or however you want to put it.

Indded these are generic 650mg aceitominophen's as stated above.
