Well... that's the thing. There isn't much time or money wasted as if I'm not writing my paper, I would just be at home... or going out. The money... well... no money wasted. :)

    Studying osteology...

Also have a thesis on the paleohistopathology of syphiliis. Pretty much, can we find evidence of syphilis in archaeological remains of human bone?

OMG, I feel for you, I wrote my LAST paper last Wednesday.

Now, syphilis is a disease of the organs, basically, correct me if I'm wrong, so how will you find it in bones? I know it can affect the brain... but...

Maybe we should start our own thread about our medical mis (oops) adventures. LOL

    Start,

Osteology = the study of the bones
  • Apr 15, 2008, 07:06 PM
    ISneezeFunny
After some time, once syphilis is at its most advanced stages, it starts to eat the cortical bone... and a person with syphilis, after they die, will have lesions on their skulls.

It's a pretty big deal, as researchers are trying to decide if the Europeans brought syph into the New World or if the Old World gave the Europeans the syph... which led to a massive epidemic in the 1600s. The lesions found, however, could be from osteoporosis and other diseases... so I'm trying to figure out if the syph will have a SPECIFIC type of lesion.. . not a big fan.
  • Apr 15, 2008, 07:11 PM
    J_9
Well, this is sexual disorders, I am a big fan. LOL

I did not realize that the lesions were left on the skull, but only on the brain itself, causing mental illness if left untreated.

Now, the question is, does osteoporosis leave lesions? I was of the belief that it was a breakdown of the bone and lesions were not present.

SPECIFIC type of lesion? Hmmm, I was tired, (very interesting day in surgery), but now you have my brain ticking.

Friend and Starby, I love good emails!!

I can send you some too Starty! :)

Oh boy, I need a break here you guys! I'm scared to answer my phone anymore! Just seems to be bad news all the time lately.

I just got a call from my Aunt, and my cousin and his wife were hospitalized today. The Dr.'s can't figure out what is going on, but there is suspicion that it may be the Super Bug. My cousins wife is on life support right now... has a growth of some kind on her lung, among other things. My cousin has developed serious pheumonia, and he is getting worse by the minute. They have 2 young kids. The Dr,'s are working like crazy to find out the cause, because they both had flu symptoms, and within 24 hrs they have both gone down hill very quickly.

    Very scary stuff! :(

Sneezy... is there anything you know about this new Super Bug virus?

The only thing I know is that it's goes rapidly. I've only read a few things, and watched an Oprah show about it.

By superbug I'm assuming you're referring to mrsa?
  • Apr 15, 2008, 08:18 PM
    starbuck8
Yes, I assume that is what they are talking about.

The Dr.'s are saying that the antibiotics aren't working.
  • Apr 15, 2008, 08:19 PM
    ISneezeFunny
Well, MRSA is pretty much a super-staph infection. It "usually" begins on the surface of the skin via injury, cut, sore, etc. and then will spread. Most often, it remains on the skin and is uncommon for it to travel through the bloodstream to other parts of the body... of course, this is "uncommon" but does happen.

You said the symptoms were flu-like and got worse within 24 hours?
  • Apr 15, 2008, 08:24 PM
    starbuck8
That's the info I got. They both got sick at the same time, and both started going down hill very quickly.

I forgot to mention... his wife also had a cyst under her armpit, that just developed shortly before they were both admitted
  • Apr 15, 2008, 08:33 PM
    ISneezeFunny
Doesn't seem like MRSA at all, I wonder why the doctors are suspecting mrsa. Granted, they actually WENT to med school... so they probably know far more than I do... but that's just my vote. Doesn't seem like TB either, as TB takes a while to develop.
  • Apr 15, 2008, 08:35 PM
    ISneezeFunny
Hm. Cyst underarm means her lymph nodes are swollen, which is indication of an infection...
  • Apr 15, 2008, 08:36 PM
    starbuck8
Hmmm, well I don't know why they are thinking that either. I may not have all of the info myself because my Aunt only told me just a few details. I just wonder why 2 people in the same household would get so sick in such a short period? And to make them so sick that one is on life support at this stage.
  • Apr 15, 2008, 08:38 PM
    ISneezeFunny
It's definitely environmental... I'm assuming from their home or someone brought it home and the other became sick. Luckily, the kids didn't get sick, which is unbelievable as children are usually the first to get sick due to their weaker immune system.

I certainly do hope they get better soon... and my curious nature is going to want to know what they had. Keep us posted.

Well didn't I just say that I shouldn't answer my phone? My Aunt had to hang up because of a call from the hosp. so I don't know what is going on. I then got a phone call from my best friend of 20 plus yrs. She has had really bad probs with kidney stones for yrs, they sent her for a CT scan, and then an ultrasound. Found a shadow between her pancreas and her stomach, and she's waiting for results. But she said for 5 days after her ultrasound she feels like she has got a severe sunburn on her lower back, but no rash or redness.

I guess I should post on the medical forum eh?

Sorry!. this is Alty's FUN pub ;) The drinks are on me tonight k? :D
  • Apr 15, 2008, 09:26 PM
    ISneezeFunny
Well, the pancreas is actually one of the hardest areas to visualize via ultrasound as it's filled with loops and gases that visually obstruct the view. So the shadow may in fact be nothing. As far as the burning, it could be a number of things, but with her kidney stone problem, as well as the area of the burning sensation, I have a feeling that she may have a kidney infection.

What's her status as far as seeing the doc?

On our first holiday together, we went to Mauritius where we had booked a room in a lovely hotel. On our first night there, we had cocktails and then went for a romantic stroll along the beach. When we came back, we lay down on one of the chaise lounges next to the pool. It seemed deserted and we started getting really steamy. I kept looking around to check that there was absolutely no-one there - and there wasn't. So we slipped out of our clothes and slid into the pool to see if it was possible to have sex underwater. We were doing quite well with our experiment when suddenly, out of nowhere, a member of the hotel staff appeared and told us, very politely, that it was better to keep intimacy to our bedroom. The pool, he added, had an underwater window that made up one of the walls of the hotel's disco, and we had been the floor show for all the guests who were dancing -until they had seen us. I was so humiliated that I made my boyfriend check us out of the hotel first thing the next morning, and I spent the rest of the holiday dreading the flight back in case anyone recognised us.'

Here's a quote I heard today , hopefully it'll bring a smile to starby (might post it in Hchicky's quotes post as well)

When I was born God gave me two choices...

(1)... I could either have a good memory...

    OR
    (2)... Be good in bed!

    Bugger!.
Now I forgot what I was going to tell you!!

She just saw her Doc Friday, and the results weren't in yet. He told her not to worry, but she's a mess just wondering! Yeah, she said that they couldn't tell what the shadow was by her pancreas. Apparently they checked for a kidney infection also, but that isn't the case. So I don't know what's going on!

I've got a pimple on my forehead... should I be worried? LMAO!

Sorry, I shouldn't make light of their probs, but I need to laugh! Someone tell me a good joke, lol
