You have no idea. She came up behind me. I felt something following me, so I turned around. She couldn't have been more than a couple feet away. As soon as she knew I saw her, she started barking. That get-off-my-turf-before-i-eat-your-face bark that dogs only give when they mean business.
Maybe I'm weird, but pit bulls don't scare me. Dogs don't really scare me. There are just some that you can TELL it's not safe to approach. Most of the time, all you have to do is stay calm and back away until you're out of their territory. I've never met a dog intent on attack to the point of giving chase.
I think it's the people that don't know how to act around dogs that are afraid of them. I've seen people try to pet a strange dog without warning it. I've seen people come up behind a dog and start petting it. I've sen people ignore barking and laid back ears. I've seen some really stupid people.
You ALWAYS let an animal sniff you before petting it, and make sure they're OK with it first. My neighbor's dogs know me and love me. They're both huge sweethearts that I see pretty much every day, usually twice. I stop to pet them every time I see them. I STILL let them sniff my hand before trying to pet them.
Unless you've lived with an animal for awhile, you just can't KNOW how they'll react on any given day. Maybe they're cranky. Maybe someone was teasing them. Maybe they have excess energy they haven't been able to burn off. Until you know an animal's every moods, you don't know them well enough to approach them without warning. Even if you've known an animal it's entire life, you still need to respect it's moods.
And I turned this into a rant.
