Can you press your "start" button and see the command "run"?
Try typing control in that box and hit enter. That should give you control panel.
I was in the control panel... none of the things that you listed are in the control panel.
Do you have Yahoo messenger?? That might be easier..
Under control panel did you see an icon labeled computer management ?
Yup, found it under Administrative Tools
OK it should be in there.
Here is a link if its not there.
Sorry been awhile since had to work with XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...devicemgr.mspx
Ok, I found it... now what?
Once you get it open then check for the usb controller or any highlighted with yellow.
Ok, Found the USB controller.
Click the little arrow next to it and it should open a drop down list. Do you see usb hub in there anywhere or yellow triangles ?
No Yellow triangles and there are 6 USB Root Hubs
Do any say composite device or host controller ?
Yup, found the host controller!
If you right click it and choose properties it should tell you if it is working or not. It should be under the "general" tab. You might have to go through all of them and check to see if the system actually sees them as "working".
I don't have right click... remember the issue with the mouse...
It says that its working properly...
Hit enter once you have it highlighted and that should bring it up also.
Yup, nothing... works properly...
Do you have a mouse to plug into a port ? Or a memory stick ?
no. I can plug in my mp4 player...
Ok. Before you do that lets try something real quick. Colapse the tree your on. Highlight The "universal Serial Bus Controllers".
Then your going to need to right click.
To right click with a keyboard hold down the "shift" key and then press F10.
A box should open. Highlight scan for hardware changes and press enter.
It seems to be working... Guess I need to invest in a mouse to see if it really works...
Awesome. The power of the internet works again :)
Glad its working.
In that same place "device manager" you should be able to check on your touchpad and buttons.
Let me know if you need help.
Also don't forget. Dell has a diagnostic utility for your laptop.
Drivers & Downloads
Good to go!
Nothing works... still. I downloaded that link. Nothing.
Both. The USB's never worked... They are reading but not actually letting anything work..
Did the diagnostic program on that link tell you anything at all ?
Did you say you tried an External USB Mouse?
