    Beginner on the Guitar
Hi there my loyal subjects! Ironclad needs help? I was thinking about taking up the guitar and trying to learn how to play it! But the problem is, I don't know where to begin?? Any advice for the basics of a beginner?

    Hi, ironclad04!

What kind of guitar do you have and what sort of playing are you wanting to learn, please?

    Thanks!

I want to learn how to play both electric and acoustic but I don't know where to begin, what's easier anyway? I'm into slow classic rock and when I'm good I want to be able to play some metal like metallica, but that's me dreaming, I need some heavy basics first, I'm a pretty good learner so I'm not too worried?? Hope this helps?

    Hi again, ironclad04!

I've already asked you previously what kind of guitar it is that you have. Do you own a guitar?

    Thanks!

Well I know about the positioning of the fingers for the chords? Certain strumming for the chords to produce good sound affect, my father used to play, but I didn't bother asking at the time? But nothing major, I'm just starting, but if I can get that down patt, I can start practicing diff. kinds of music I like, and hopefully write my own!

Clough, your good man!! Lol just kidding with yah, I challenged Altenweg to chess, think she'll take the bait??
Well I know how to tune it a little according to the tunes that I want I guess?? Or to the notes that I want to get? Am I close!?

Tuning to the tunes is one thing. Really tuning it is another. The intervals between most of the strings shouldn't have any beats between them.

What are the letter names of your strings, bottom to top, please?

    Thanks!

Do you know the names of at least some of the strings? That's important, you know...

The books didn't help me. My advice would be to pick it up and learn the way you would like to play it first of all.. take one string and try to figure out how to play twinkle twinkle or something simple. Then after you feel comfortable. Try hitting up youtube.com and see if you can follow some of the finger arrangements (aka chords) of some of your less complicated songs. "Knocking on heavens door " was an easy one for me at first. Keep the momentum up, for your fingers will take a brutal beating from an acoustic! Ha

Using an acoustic guitar would be easier for a beginner player.

For those of you who keep posting on this thread, please realize that it's a really old thread that is now archived and not generally visible, unless someone happens to visit the forum topic area where it's located.

If you have a new question that's not in some way, an answer to the very first question at the top of the page, I would strongly suggest that you start a new thread with your new question.

    Thanks!

I have been trying to play guitar for a bit. You should probably start with a learning guitar book.

NOTE: It helps to start on another string instrament (violin, viola, chello, double bass)
