Ac unit will not turn on
Hi the unti just will not turn on. It is a lennox elite 13 and only 5 years old. Is there a reset button anywhere we have checked the circuits and fuses

    Does the inside blower run?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:21 PM

The inside blower runs the outside unit does not kick on
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:22 PM
    Joshdta

OK, I can tell you what to look for outside if you have time and would like to try to fix it.

I checked all fuses and thermostats and circuits. This si the first time we tried to use it this year

    What brand unit?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:23 PM
    campi1
Yes I would like to try and fix it if I call the company it will be a fortune
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:24 PM
    Joshdta

OK, first is it just a ac unit or a heat pump?

    Just a cental ac unit

OK go outside and remove the pannal where the power wire goes in. What you are going to be looking for is the contactor.

See the 2 butons in the middle. You can push them with a screw driver to see if the unit comes on. If it does then your problem is in th t-stat wiring some where. If it doesn't then we have a high voltage problem.

OK be right back,we had to pull the fuse to push those buttons and there is deffinetly electric going there but the unit does noting
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:42 PM
    Joshdta

If you push the bottons with the fuse in the unit should come on. If it does sound like you have a high or low pressuer switch problem.

If we push the buttons with the fuse in we get electrocuted (LOL) it sparked a little
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:47 PM
    Joshdta

Yea it will spark just a bit the wires are on the top and the bottom that have the power as long as you stay on the buton you will not get shocked.

Have you had the ac on a few times already this year?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:49 PM

Also I is the any type of control board in there beside the contactor?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 07:58 PM
    campi1

No this is the first time and there was no control board

The unit did not kick on whenthose buttons were touched

The dual capacitator was replaced last year for a mere $350
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:00 PM
    Joshdta

OK, then odds are you are low on freon, did the fan start to spin when you pushed the contactor in and it sparked?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:01 PM
    Joshdta
Wow 350 for a compasitor, I am not making enough money I only charge $45
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:01 PM
    Joshdta
OK and you are sure you have power to the fuse box outside?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:04 PM
    campi1

I wish you lived in NY then! We have power, the fan did nothing, no noise of any sort
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:05 PM
    campi1
How often should the freon be charged
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:05 PM
    campi1
I do not knopw much about the freon situation, rough estimate on cost to have this done
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:06 PM
    Joshdta

Do you see your $300 capasitor in there? Check to see if it is swolen where the wires connect.
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:07 PM
    campi1

    No it looked fine why?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:07 PM
    Joshdta
Hear about $14 pre pound, there probably about $30 per pound plus a service call, but if it did not run when you pushed that in you have anouther problem
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:07 PM
    campi1
    First thing I checked
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:08 PM
    Joshdta
OK do you have fuses in the power box outside or just a pull disconnect?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:09 PM
    campi1

    A large double fuse
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:10 PM
    campi1
But there is deffineytly power getting to the conductor thing I touched before
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:11 PM
    Joshdta

OK, well form what we have done so far. If you pushed in the contactor with the power on.. the only 2 things that would keep it from running is a bad compasitor, or no power. Could 1 side of the doube fuse have blow?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:15 PM
    campi1

I will try to replace it, how difficult to replace a compasitator
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:16 PM
    campi1
Should I call them back should it last more than 2 years I know the part is cheap
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:17 PM
    Joshdta

Do you have a volt meter?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:21 PM
    campi1

yes, it is too dark now to use it I =can try in the morning where
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:22 PM
    campi1
I guess for tonight we will sweat and I will try again tomorrow before I give in and call. First I guess I check the voltage, then check for a swollen capactitator and if nothing there then call for service?
  • Apr 26, 2009, 08:23 PM
    Joshdta

On that contactor. Check the 2 termanals at the bottom for 220 volts, then the 2 termanal at the top for 220 volts. Then the 2 small blue wires on the sides check them for 24 volts and let me know what you find
