I was born in Paris, France. My parents are both from France and moved here when I was a few years old. I would like to apply for my French passport and reside in France in the near future. I am pursuing a higher degree in Animal Sciences. I am currently a Registered Veterinary technician.
My question is... how do I keep both nationalities? How difficult is it to attain a job in France? Does anyone know anyone in this field of work?

Hello. I've been searching everywhere for clear information on this, but it's still incredibly confusing. I am a US citizen, and my fiancé is a French citizen residing in the US on a student's visa. From what I've seen, it's possible for us to both have dual-citizenship when we marry (which is what we want). But I've also seen that we have to decide whether to get married in the US or France, and I'm not really sure what's best. We rather wanted to have two ceremonies, so that his family and mine could be involved.

Also, we plan on living in the US, but I want to know what happens when we travel to France? Do we enter as citizens? Do we come back through US immigration as US citizens? Do we have the rights of citizenship in both countries?

And when we have children, what where their nationality be?

I would greatly appreciate any help. Marriage is confusing enough as it is, but with all this, it's overwhelming!

My parents are American and I was born in La Chapelle, France. Since my father was in the US military, he had to fill out a Department of Defense (DOD) form declaring that I was "born of American parents overseas." I have copies of both my French birth certificate and DOD form having lost originals over 20 years ago. I do have a valid US passport.

I have two questions. Who would I speak to about getting original copies of my birth certificate? And, I would like to explore the possibility of obtaining French citizenship without jeopardizing my US citizenship. I have several former military-dependant friends who are in the same position.

I was born in Neuilly Sur Seine at the AMerican Hospital in 1978 and need to get an original birth certificate to file for my green card.
I am not a french citizen. I am A swiss citizen.. but can I apply for my french citizenship too?
I do not speak french either.

Please advise how to go about getting my birth certificate.

I am seeking assistance out of complete and utter frustration. My fiancé is a French citizen that lived in Canada for 18 years before returning to France last month. He is currently staying at a hotel in Paris so he can get a machine readable passport to entert the US. He is waiting for a copy of his birth certificate from Toulon and then needs to get his passport before travelling to the US for our wedding. I understand the process once he gets to the US, there is plenty of information available online here. We haevn't had as much success with French websites; can't even locate sites with accurate, if any, information.

My question is does anyone know how he should go about obtaining his birth certificate from Toulon and how long this normally takes (I can't even find a site online with this information in French or English (I use Bable Fish to translate)? Once he receives his birth certificate and applies for his passport how long will it take to receive his passport (the site I found states 10 days, he found another site that states 3 weeks...in the US it is about a month...so what is accurate)?

He sent a self-addressed stamped envelope to Toulon with his request, by express mail, but has not received any response for several weeks now. The cost of the hotel is getting out of hand.

Any information will be helpful (including working websites).

My husband's great grandmother was born in France and married a US citizen and moved to the US. There she had one daughter (my husbands grandmother [still living].) She had two daughters (my husbands mother and aunt[still living].) We are planning to move overseas and things would be a lot easier if we had dual EU citizenship. I have done a ton of research and called the SF Embassy, where I got right through to someone live and knowledgeable the number to call is on this web page:

He told me to first find out if my husbands great grandmother gave up her French citizenship to move to and live in the USA and if she did was it before 1973. If so then none of us are eligible for dual citizenship because of a law in France that was established during the war when women would marry USA military men and move to the USA.

That being said there is a loop hole. He told me that if my husbands great grandmother put her daughter (husbands grandmother) on the family book (Livert de famille) then she is still eligible or rather has a right to her French citizenship and is still seen as a French citizen in France. Now I have to find out this information and he said to call him back when I do. He was fantastic, he spoke English and really wanted to help me.

I signed up just to answer this question! Anyway, there is a great article on French citizenship that pretty much covers every aspect of becoming a French citizen. I think you should really check it out, it's probably the most informative in the English language.

Hi, I am currently going through the process. My father is french and my mother is American. I went to the Consulate and provided over numerous visits, the following documents: original and xeroxed copies of father's identification card; father's passport; father's birth certificate; paternal grandmother's birth certificate; marriage license of my mother and father; mother's birth certificate; my birth certificate; my passport; a form provided by consulate indicating that I am applying for citizenship as a 'majeur personne'; form provided by consulate that my father filled out to register his marriage to my mother. I have hope and faith that this will help you.

That helps loads. I'm looking into French citizenship because my grandmother, who passed away, was from France. However, she did marry an American military-man and raised a family in the U.S. I have no clue if my mother is listed on the Livert de famille.. How can I find out?

I am a dual citizen of the US and France, and can tell you it is both entirely legal and safe to do so.

Basically, France doesn't allow anyone to not be French once you are a citizen, and the US Supreme Court ruled many years back that essentially unless you join the military of a foreign state engaged in hostile activities with the US with the intend to kill Americans (terrorist groups not included, by the way), or go to a US embassy or consulate abroad and demand to relinquish your US citizen, then they assume you want to stay a citizen and so you stay a citizen.

Basically, go ahead, France is a great ally of the US, and there is really no reason for you to worry about losing your US citizen. Also, when applying for the French citizen remember to be included on your mother's livre famille -- makes life easier later on and for your kids to become citizens as well.
