    How to become emancipated
    I am not sure if I am in the right place but here gos.

    A friend of mine has a 17yr old child living with her. This child who we will call lori was put out by her mother over 6 months ago. Is it possible for her to become emancipated on those grounds alone. Lori's mother refuses to let her sign up for school or to get a job. Tonight when Lori said she is going to call the police to get her things (clothes, personal, and social security card) mom said she is reporting her as a runaway. What are our options?

    File for gaudianship. At 17 its almost not worth trying for emancipation because most states allow for it to be automatic at 18. Depending on where you live that could also be 21. If you garner custody then you can enroll her in school etc. She can get a job already on her own merrit.

    How can my friend keep herself out of troouble until she can file for gaudianship? Lori's mom is reporting her tonight as a runaway.

    She should have went 6 months ago to apply. But as for now she might be able to contact Children's Services in her home area and ask how to handle it. Since she has already been taking care of the child for 6 months and hasn't required school for her in a round about way she is breaking the law by aiding and abeding. So if the police knock then she will have to let her go until something legal is filed. She really needs a lawyer for this also. And where is the father ?

    If she is reported tonight as a runaway then the girl will be picked up and brought back home. There really isn't anything your friend can do at this point because it is the weekend.

    The step-father does not want her in the house and her real father has never been in her life.

    The real father needs to be told of the situation because he may come forward for custody or along another line adoption proceedings. How long until she is 18 ?

    She just turned 17 yesterday. No one knows where the real father is. So everyone is doing this blind.

    What state is this taking place in ? Because in some states ( not many ) emancipation doesn't occur until age 21.

    Otherwise she has 1 year to deal with the mess until she can make it go away.

    Ok, no emancipation is not going to happen, not that fast, she will have to have a job that is earning enough money to pay alll of her bills including rent somewhere ( can not count just living with someone)

    Even applying in court, getting a court date, the court to review, do studies, will take almost the year.

    Next 6 months ago, she was suppose to ( or the people who took her in) are suppose to contact children and family services.

    Not only can she be picked up for a run away, the people who are housing her could even be charged with interfering with custody.

    Now the issue on school, this needed to be addressed since of course there are laws requiring schools to accept students. Mother could be in trouble for not doing what was requried, but then no one reported it.

    Minnesota so I do know that at the age of 18 she is an adult. I was emancipated at the age of 16 however my mother consented this.
