HELP!! Wiring a pull chain in a Hunter ceiling fan
Ok, my 81 year old mother's ceiling fan pull chain broke off inside the switch. I was careful when I changed the switches, only changing one color at a time. It didn't work, so I called my electrician brother-in-law who discombooberated the whole mess, told me the switch I got was bad and went on with his life. I got a new switch today but since he took all the wires out I have no idea who goes where. I have a black, green, brown and 2 gray wires. Now I know one of the gray ones gets tied to the gray wire in the ceiling fan. Just figure it's the one closest to the end of the switch but I could be wrong there too. It's been quite warm here in West Virginia and my mother doesn't like running the A.C. any more than she has to but she loves her fan. Can someone help us out?

With what your brother-in-law did, it's very difficult to get it hooked back up. We can try a few things, starting with:

    1. Do you still have the original broken switch
    2. Do you know the model of the fan?

Well, the answer to both is no. I believe the old one got pitched, and the only info that my mom has on had is that the fan is from 1990. The installation sheet didn't have any model number and I couldn't find one on the fan. Big help, huh.

If it is a Hunter fan, the number should be on there. And since Hunter is one of the few companies with halfway decent technical support, you should be able to call them and get a wiring diagram. Knock on wood.
