My dog gets very bored in the house when I am away, he chews things and becomes somewhat destructive. He is crated now, because I hated coming home to chewed up things, and then I was to mad at my dog to enjoy our playtime. I hate crating him inside now that the weather is nice, so I was wondering if I was to leave him outside while I am away (On a leash since he jumps the fence) what does he need? He has a five gallon pail of water.. but what could I use for shelter? Since it gets 30 degrees Celsius, he can't be in his tin dog house that was made for winter...

It is never a good idea to tether a dog when you aren't there to keep an eye on it. So many things can go wrong from extremely bad weather popping up to the dog getting the tether caught around something and choking itself. I don't know if you have predator (hawk, eagle, coyote, etc.) problems where you live, but a small tethered dog can be seen as easy prey.

Do you have a way to build him a covered run? Maybe using a corner of the existing fence for two sides of it?

Where he is tied there is nothing he can tangle up with, but I get what your saying. I've never seen a coyote here other than at night, but I guess there is a chance, and I think he may be too big for a hawk to pick up (He is 18 pounds) Would latis(SP?) be okay to make him a covered run, or is it to weak? I do not have a lot of money, and thinking he would be able to be tide up I haven't saved any money...

Lattice work itself won't support a roof, but what kind of frame/supports hold it up? They might provide anchors for roofing of some kind.

Another idea is a doggie-door with the crate just inside the door. The weather flaps keep temperature pretty well regulated and all you need to buy is the door. This leaves the question of whether he can be trusted to go outside by himself.

He is trusted alone by himself, but since he can jump the fence he can't be free; he was outside all day today and never barked (Since I was home I thought it was fine). The lattice would be framed with two by fours(or something similar) that have grooves to hold it together and then a lattice roof.

Shaded areas is the trick to keeping dogs cool, along with cool water.

If it is going to be a permanent structure maybe you could plant a tree in the run?
You can buy fairly large trees from gardening stores, they wouldn't have quite enough shade yet but in a year or so you wouldn't need any sort of roof over it, just a kennel to go in there along with the tree.

Why not purchase a dog kennel that is 6ft tall with the canvas shade cover and snug it up against the house. A lot of people have a doggy door leading from a mud room into the dog room.

If a dog is going to be left outside during the summer months, provide shelter, fresh water, toys and food.

What you could also do, with the fence you currently have. Instead of battling him with staying, why not purchase invisible electric fence and run the wires along the fence line. A lot of owners do that with dogs that jump fences but aren't aloud to build a bigger fence. That could fix the issue all together without a huge expense!

This isn't a puppy, this is a full grown dog. Dogs do not need milk.
