How to potty train puppy mill puppy?
My puppy was in a pet store, probably came from a puppy mill. She was in a kennel at the store for 5 months. Before I bought her. When I put her in a crate she poos. She lived in a pet store kennel with poo and pee falling below through grates. I closed off an area with puppy pads. We she sometimes used the pad but then tracked it all over the remaining area or just tore up the pad and then I had to clean clean clean to get the dried poo off the floor and the wall if she jumped up. I am at wits end. I am back to the crate. Somehow she managed to drop a poo outside(which was OK at least she wasn't it tracking it all over), but then she pooed in the mat bed used because she peed in the bigger fluffy bed. Now I have once again reduced the size of the crate and put a small bed in it. I think she done OK today but everyday has its own dilemma. I am running home at lunch with barely enough time to take her out(which usually does not produce any results, she mostly wants a drink so I reduced the amount of water, and I barely make it back on time. Considering tethering her to table leg with only about 12" to 24". Am afraid she will somehow hang herself. Help! I will say this"DO NOT BUY PUPPIES FROM A PET STORE, DO NOT BUY PUPPIES FROM UNCLE BILLS PET STORE" I am sure she is puppy mill and the longer they are at the store the harder it evidently is going to be. They wonder where the dogs come from at the ASPCA. I'm guessing unsuspecting idiots like myself who after a lengthy time just give up and surrender the dog over before they lose their own sanity. Would love any advice!!

Using pee pads are just going to confuse your dog. How often is this dog going outside? You are most likely going to have to start from scratch. Outside after eating, after playing, after drinking, after waking up, etc. Tie a leash to your waist attached to her so she is always with you and you can pick up signs. Take her out very often. Praise praise praise when she goes outside. Do you punish her when she has an accident?

Your dog was born in a cage, then was sold to a pet store and kept in a cage. Pooing and peeing where you sleep isn't natural to a dog, but if that's the only option you're given, that's what you learn. That's what your dog has learned from the moment she was born, and yes, she is a puppymill dog, breeders don't sell to pet stores.

This is going to take time and patience, and a lot of work. All puppies do, but this one is going to take a bit more effort. If you don't have the patience to do this properly, and sadly it doesn't sound like you do, then find a new home for her now. The older she gets, the more she's taught bad habits, the harder she'll be to train and the less likely it will be fore her to find her forever home.

How often is she walked? Do you walk her until she poos and pees, or do you give up, go inside, lock her in her kennel, and then get mad when she does her thing in her kennel, like she's been taught to do?

Let me put it this way. You're born in a country where you pee and poo outside. From the moment you're born you're taught to pee and poo outside. That's all you know. Then you move, and the people in the new country don't appreciate you peeing and pooing outside. But instead of telling you and showing you what they want you to do, they just yell at you whenever you pee and poo outside. You've never seen a bathroom, you don't know what it's for, and no one is showing you what to do.

That's the dilema your pup is in.

Throw out the puppy pads, or get used to your dog peeing and pooing in your house, and not always on the pads. Carpet is like a pad, your bed is like a pad, the clothes on the floor are like a pad. They don't know the difference, they're dogs!

As of right now you need to take her out every 30 minutes. State your command "potty time, do your thing, make" whatever you choose, but choose one and never change it. When she does go potty, which she eventually will if she's given enough opportunity, you praise her like she just won millions in the lottery. I'm talking jumping up and down, hugs, kisses, treats, tons of "good girl! Good girl! Such a good girl!" Go nuts! Let her know that this is what you want her to do.

If she potties inside, it's a firm no, and then take her outside, say the command, and wait. If you catch her mid potty, pick her up and take her outside. Even if she's in the middle of a pee, or just about to drop a poo, you pick her up, say no, and then take her outside, use your potty word, and wait for her to do her thing.

It's going to take time. She needs to learn what you expect, and she needs to unlearn what she was taught.
