My dog swallowed a pork rib bone, what should I do
My yellow lab, 95 lbs, swallowed a pork rib bone - she has swallowed a small bone in the past and her stomach acids took care of it cause nothing bad happened.

Its about 4 inches long and 1/2 an inch wide. What should I do>
    Feed her bread?

I am sorry no one was around to answer your question last night. You should always call your vet's emergency number if you don't know what to do. I hope you at least fed her the white bread. Vets have been changing their direction regarding that piece of advice. White bread is broken down by stomach acid. They are now recommending that you mix cotton balls in with some wet dog food and feed it to your dog. They will provide the cushioning needed to keep the object in the stomach without the fear of it perforating or puncturing anything. It keeps the object from entering the bowels and makes it easier for them to perform surgery.

If the bone was cooked, it could splinter and perforate him internally if he chewed on it. If he didn't chew on it, a 4 inch long bone will not pass through the system easily. If you haven't done so already, please call your vet ASAP. Watch your dog's responses carefully and report whatever you are seeing to your vet. If he appears lethargic, vomits, refuses to eat and/or drink, is not pooping or has diarrhea, you need to get him into a vets office immediately. Please let us know how he is doing.

I wouldn't do any thing at this point let it settle and than see if it makes him sick my mother in laws dogs ate whole corn cobbs and her stomach broke it down and she was able to pass them. With dogs its chicken bones you need to worry about :)

I hope you listened to RubyPitbull. One thing you need to watch for is black, tarry stools. That is what blood looks like when it makes it out.

My miniature dashshund chewed up a pork bone, and I had to take him to the vet. My vet xrayed my dog and showed me my dogs swollen stomach with black areas from the bone damage. He gave my dog a pain shot and told me to mix good canned dog food with some dry dog food and make small meatballs (like spaghetti meat balls) and feed him a small amount twice a day so not to cause a blockage. He also told me that not to be surprised if I saw blood in his stools. He said that should take care of it, but if he shows no improvement over the weekend to bring him back Monday and my dog might have to have surgery. You have no idea how bad I feel about this, and I did not even give him the bone, my boyfriend gave it to him as a treat. Some treat. :-(

petowner1, the lab has digested the bone by now. Did you notice that this question was asked 2 YEARS ago?
