When I adopted my dog who is now approximately 12 months, the humane society told me he was Boxer mix. He is almost pure white, with a few brown patches on him, and now at about 80 lbs at least. He had "red mange" for the majority of the time when he was a puppy. I've researched the facts on white boxers and this was a common occurrence with them. However, as he's grown his face is not scrunched at all like my other boxer and his face looks just like a Pit Bull. I bathed him the other day and I realized he had about 3 layers of hair, which is really odd for both breeds; Boxer and Pit Bull. He has a very prominent underbite also which anymore is the only indicator he may be Boxer. He has a very large neck and is REALLY thick. He is not built like a Boxer in the slightest and his built also resembles a Pit Bull. Also, his tail curls up, not significantly but just a little. I'm not real sure if Pit Bulls do this or if even Boxers who still have their tails do this. I'm a big dog nut & am very stuck on him and would like to know for sure what he is. His fur is what throws me off the most, ANY HELP?? Thanks!

Haha I did that! I don't know what my problem or my computer's problem is. I couldn't find anywhere to attach pictures when I was writing my question. But I just attached a link in my 2 answers in attempt to show pictures of him, doing exactly what you said but I'm obviously doing something wrong. Thanks!

Did you try using the paper clip icon (top of the advanced message window) to browse files on your computer and upload the images? It also has a list of supported files and file sizes. Once you have the image up loaded close that window, place the cursor in the message window where you want it, and then click the paper clip icon again. It will have your files ready to attach to the post.

Good luck posting pics. I can't wait to see them. :)

I agree with Cats! He is certainly different, but a beautiful boy!
In the first photo my gut said boxer/pit. But with his body there is definitely something else in there, just can't put my finger on it.

Honestly, don't waste your money.

The only thing DNA tests are good for is determining genetic diseases and proving parentage.

I remember reading on a DNA kit site that they can 100% prove what breed your dog is if you don't already know.
But if you know your dogs breed and it is a pedigree they can't do it accurately... HUH?? Sounds suss to me.

The reason I don't like these kits is because if your test comes back as say Pit x Malamute then you are going to go researching all about Pits and Malamutes...
But what if your dog really has a working breed like Border Collie in it? They have completely different needs and drives than a Pit or a Mala.

Oh and thank you by the way, we love him to death. Thank you both! He looked like a Boxer when he was tiny and when he was a puppy that's exactly what he was TINY. I mean what happened? Haha he's huge but I'm thinking Mastiff/Malamute, he'd be a giant! Haha

It's amazing seeing how much they can change and grow... especially with mixed breeds, it's like a lucky dip :D

But I just enjoy knowing things for sure. I'm thinking of going to my local vet and seeing what he thinks about me sending in a blood sample. I mean there's so many things I think about his breed/breeds but I'm not positive in the slightest. I'm just the kind of person that loves researching dogs and have quite a bit of knowledge on them but this, this has stomped me. I would just like to know for sure you know? Thanks for the advice!

The spine's too long for him to have a lot of Pitt. That's why I said Mastiff. Those are about the only two large breeds with that wide a brisket.

Does it really matter, Mike? The DNA would be good to find out about genetic predispositions for dysplasia and eye problems, but for breed I.D. Heinz 57 is as close as it's going to get.

Unfortunately you will never know for sure unless you know who his parents are.
You will get an answer back from a DNA test, but it won't be accurate.

I've been to two vets and they both said, he's at LEAST a Boxer, which anymore just blows my mind.

I see a pitty in there. Not sure on the other ones, but he is really gorgeous! I can see the boxer too. I agree with Shaz, those DNA tests are bogus.

He looks like he has a lot of American Bulldog in him. The first picture looks like a Dogo Argentino but those aren't that common.

He wouldn't be as large as a mastiff because of the other breeds in him. That's the joy of a mixed breed, you never really know what you're going to get in terms of size, temperament, or looks. It's anyone's guess. :)

You have a beautiful dog, he looks healthy and well cared for, that's really all that matters in the long run.

I have a border collie mix that acts nothing like a border collie. When you look at him the border collie is the breed that stands out the most, the other breeds involved in his makeup are pretty well hidden. He's lazy (not a border collie trait), tall (for a border collie), and really doesn't like to herd all that much, but when people see him they assume he's a border collie. Thankfully he is smart like a border collie, so that's a plus. :)

Then there's my border collie lab mix. His father was purebred border collie, his mother was border collie/lab, but he looks nothing like a border collie. His siblings do, but he's more like a black lab. The only thing even close to border collie about him is his tail and his head. Not the look of his head, but the size. His head is too small for his body because of the mix. His fur is very soft and a bit longer, unlike a lab, but other then that he's more lab then border collie, even though the border collie really should have been more prominent.

Either way, you have a beautiful dog. Congrats. :)

Yea I know, that's just the way I am, I'd like to know for sure what all he is. But, the thing is, the other possible breeds are all fairly large, so that's what led me to believe there's a slim chance he could be mastiff. Ah, who knows when it comes to mixed breeds. Thanks for everyone's help!

That's Boxer straight up.

That's about the only quality that makes me believe he has some Boxer in him.

Chihuahua's are also known to have and underbite, but I doubt that's a part of his mix. ;)

The most common dogs that have underbites are the "bully breeds". Such as bulldogs, mastiffs, etc. But I have also seen small breeds with underbites. I have also seen labs & golden retrievers with underbites. So unfortunately, there's not really a specific breed that has underbites

It doesn't necessarily mean he definitely has Boxer (although he does look like it), there are quite a few breeds that have an underbite, it can also happen in any breed if the breeding isn't very good.

Ummm... Chihuahua don't have an underbite, they have a level or scissor bite :p

Really? Wow, I thought that the underbite was kind of like the purple tongue; when you buy a breed you will know for sure if they have it or not, depending on the breed of course. So the labs and goldies, were they purebred? What exactly causes the underbites? Since he's so large (I am actually taking him to get him weighed very soon since he's grown so much in the past few months) I thought maybe he was American Bulldog, since they are indeed larger than Boxers. But I wasn't sure due to his prominent underbite. I don't think I've ever seen a Boxer as large as him, and pitbulls are a medium dog as well. He hates stairs and what not so I have to literally lift him into my car (I have an H3 that sits up far from the ground) and I simply can not do it by myself. I have to have someone help me, and I'm not weak by all means. I can lift my Boxer with ease but definitely not him haha, it's quite comical. It's funny because when we were battling his mange all of the vets said he was at least Boxer, and everywhere I went people asked if he was pitbull, no matter where we were.

I find he looks very pit bullish maybe even Am staff which tend to be a bit bigger than the pit bull.. Yes the Goldies and Labs were definitely pure bred. It's just genetics really that cause under bites. Nothing to worry about unless they are having issues chewing. Sometimes when they are teething if their baby teeth don't fall out or one side of their mouth grows faster than the other it can cause an under bite or what is called wry mouth.

That is so cool, I never knew that. I come from a very rural place so any fairly exotic breeds (not even exotic really) don't thrive here. I've always wanted a Presa Canario and if I do I'll have to drive many hours just to reach the closest breeder. However, anyone can buy a dog, but but not a whole lot of people want an older pitbull in the pound, so I'll be rescuing again with my next dog =). I love his underbite though, he's just the cutest and sweetest pitbull mastiff looking dog you'll ever meet. He has no problem other than his lip getting caught and looking like he's making faces =P. Other than that, everything's great and I couldn't be happier with my mix who I've spend an ungodly amount on because of his illness. Wouldn't have it any other way!

I have two staffy rescues. So I commend you on rescuing!
