I have a 3 week old labrador retriever, yesterday she was energetic but yesterday night she seems to be very gloomy and wants to sleep. It worries me a lot because she vomits and bowels a lot. My mom intends to feed her with table foods (because I failed to buy dog food last sunday) what is the possible cause of this? Iam getting worried and I cannot concentrate on my work because Iam thinking of her.

She sounds like she is sick and needs to see a vet. No 3 week old should be away from its mother and litter mates. She may not be ready for all solid food yet. You really need to be feeding her dog chow. Buy dry food, and for now soften it with a little bit of water. One of the cheaper adult chows will be fine. Puppies grow faster on puppy chow, but the slower growth on adult chow is really better for their hips. There is no real evidence more expensive dog chows are better for dogs.

My mom went to see a vet for her medical attention, the vet suggest that she should have some vaccines against illness. By the way yesterday morning she is still playing, according to my brother she start to look ill in the afternoon, when my brother and the pup was sleeping on our parents room. When he woke up the pup doesn't like to play and all she want is to sleep, he found out that the pup must been choke by the wire cord of our radio.
(the wire was torn and we suspects that the pup did it) After seeing her vet and getting those shots, is my pup will be okay?
Also we bought some dog food, my mom calls and she still doesn't want to eat.
What should I do?

I am glad to hear about the vet visit and the dog food. Both improve her chances of making it. If she doesn't improve, get back with the vet. What did the vet say about feeding her? As I said, 3 weeks is early for solid food, and you need to add water. You may have to get it soupy and dip your finger in it and stick it in her mouth.

Do not fall back on giving cows' milk. Puppies can't digest the lactose in it. If you have to, you should look for milk replacer at the pet store.

I believe walmart sells the milk replacer if not them then Im sure any pet store would. Also it would be wise to puppy proof the house as much as possible. Think of what all she could destroy, or get hurt on once she is up and running around. Crates and gates are also an option when you can not keep an eye on her.

She neds to be dewormed for one thing.Worms and parasites will kill a puppy this age in a few days.Check her gums above her teeth to see if they are pink or almost white.If they are not a healthy color of pink,she is anemic,meaning something is wrong.There are man illnesses out there,so take the puppy to a vet.

Chico, if the pup still isn't eating, your mother should call the vet and discuss this with him/her. Considering she just brought the pup in, tell your Mother that vets don't usually charge for follow up consultations over the phone. It may be that the pup needs the special milk replacement product for another couple of weeks instead of chow. Your family should follow whatever the vet advises.

If your puppy is truly only 3 weeks old, as labman pointed out, she is extremely young to have been separated from her mother. Your family has to do the best they can under these conditions and follow whatever instructions the vet has given. Please be aware that a puppy that young isn't going to want to play all day long. At that age, they will sleep a lot.

I would get your puppy checked for Distemper... alot of puppies get... older dogs are somewhat immuned... watch out for heat stroke... easy for dogs or puppies to get in hot weather..

The vet also suggested that the pup must have shots for those illnesses (worms,fleas and rabies, etc.) but he pointed out that the pup have a high fever so we must let the fever go down before injecting some shots, As for the fever he gave a couple of antibiotics for her vomiting and bowel movement, vet says try this in a couple of days then get her back if still there is no improvement. I am afraid it is time to forget about a complete and balanced diet and get something into her. Anything soft and smelly would be good. Perhaps a cooked egg. Raw ones are too dangerous. She doesn't need a Salmonella infection too.

I talked to a woman at the vets today and she said her puppy's mother stopped feeding her pup at 3 weeks and she put the pup on bil jac. It seemed to be in good shape. Maybe give a little of this a try. I think the milk replacer is a super idea esp. if your pup is drinking water I would sneak some in it and see how she reacted to it. You know that all of us hopes everything turns out OK.

Okay We will try that one, although the vet says that she is not ready for dog food yet, because of her fever. But at least she have to eat even a little.

I taked her to a vet yesterday, the vet suggested that the pup should be on dextrose, I ask him if is it that bad.. he said yes my pup is starting to bowel blood, after the 10 hours under dextrose and some vitamins shots she seems to be okay, yesterday night she's starting to jump and run, even tried to lick me. Although there is an improvement still she doesn't want to eat. As for water I don't know but when my mom is giving her something to drink she would just play with the water and lie on it..
Is there something we can do to feed her? For now that is our only problem.. FEEDING HER..

I went through this with my dog.. one day he was normal the next very ill. Ended up spending thousand of dollars at the vet for them to tell me nothing... they tried medicines after meds. And nothing worked. I never found out what was wrong, we ended up putting him to sleep at nine months old. Very sad situation, hope this doesn't happen to you..

Was the dextrose an IV, or was she drinking it? If she was drinking it, you might try adding it to some of the things I have suggested. Have you tried any of them?

IV? The dextrose is injected on her veins.. My mom told me that she will try everything she could do to feed the pup. We are running out of ideas how to feed her, We don't know what is the problem.. for all those who have similar problems like me, please help me into this.

Chico I am so glad that you posted and I am very sorry to hear about your pup. You are a very good person to have tried so hard for your pup. It is good to investigate a breed before you get it and how to take care of it. Just to mention, today I went to the river and met 2 remarkable chocolate labs 1 was 17 years old her name was Autumn and the other was called Spunky she was 12. Lol Autmun was more lively than Spunky. Btw labman they ate purina dog chow. He was a bad daddy because he said he also gave them human treats, sometimes. I was just so amazed at how well the 17 year old got around. It seems good bloodlines, exercise and proper feeding go along way in the life span of a dog. Chico , I hope the next puppy you get brings you great joy.

I guess my pup had a "canine parvovirus" as this virus as my pup shows this signs Canine parvovirus causes lethargy; loss of appetite; fever; vomiting; and severe, often bloody, diarrhea. Vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration,.

It is very hard to look at her seeing her fighting the virus, my last words on her before she died is "Jingle mom bought you your favorite meal Alpo with gravy of course, okay here's the deal when you eat your chow for today we will finally go to the park ok? (when the first time she goes to our house we dropped by in the park) she enjoyed running and playing, but that time it started to rain so we go home. since then she is whining to go out but instead I hugged her and go to my parents room. My only regret in the 3 days that she was so energetic and playful we never go out again since the first time in the park,
while Iam talking at her she was looking at me, I know she wants to play with me.. she tried her very best to stand up, but then she is loosing her balance like there was something wrong in her nervous system. I know she would die.. and my family is ready to accept it.. but what we dont accept is the way she looked at us, like she is saying that "don't let me die please" To you Jingle wherever you are, we will always remember you how you unite us, (that is gone a long time ago) how you linked our hearts in one goal and how to love each other, THANKS for everything that you thought me, last week is indeed a very long week to me, but Iam happy that god gave you to me...

OH chico no one hates you for not knowing about dogs. Most people just get a dog not realizing that many bad things can happen. My first experience with a dog was very devastating, One that I spent 1000's of dollars trying to fix. It was my first dog and he also died . But that experience taught me to learn everything I could about my next dogs and to seek advice. Please be sure to get advice on how to get rid of the parvo virus before you bring another puppy in your home. From what has been posted on here the virus can live a very long time on the carpets, ground etc... so seek advice before you get another puppy. Please try not to be so sad. I will be thinking of you.

You followed my advice to take the puppy to the vet. I am not sure just why the puppy didn't make it. It was very young and lacked resources to fight that horrible disease. Your love, and that of the rest of your family was very plain in your posts. I think I will wait a day or 2 before talking about a new puppy.
