I have my little beagle. Funny story about that. We've been saving up to get him neutered. He's going in soon. What!? I kept my calm, told her that I don't allow my animals to breed, he'll be neutered soon. She insisted. So I decided to have some fun.

I asked how many years of breeding experience she had. She said it would be her first time.

I asked if she'd be paying for the genetic testing that Chewy would require. She said she wasn't doing that.

I asked many other questions, she failed on each and every one.

I finally gave her a look and said "Sorry, but I don't agree with backyard breeding" I then went on to give her a lecture about backyard breeding, puppymills, irresponsible owners. You know how I am.

She left in a huff.

My work here is done. :)

They just want to hear what they want to hear. They don't care about the millions of dogs dying because of their ingnorance, stupidity and greed.

Animals are living, breathing, feeling, loving beings. They give so much of themselves and all most humans do is take, take, take.

There are so many homeless unwanted dogs in the world right now. Not only dogs, but all different types of animals, all because of human greed.

Any person that knows about the suffering of these animals and still breeds (without being a licensed breeder) does not deserve to own an animal.

Heck, the word own makes me mad too. I don't "own" my fur babies. I share my life with them. I am blessed that they share their lives with me.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox.

I was ignorant and I learned, I also remember another person who wanted to get a dog from her daughter, and you and Shaz convinced her not to breed, you would find her a dog (she had special problems) :)

I have been reading since Jan 09 and even if it was just 2 people you convinced, it was worth the effort in my opinion.

Please keep it up, I have been singing yours and everybody else's song since I became aware. It really is just ignorance, which I was. :o

Exactly right, even if we manage to convince just one person not to breed their dog then that is 6 puppies that would never have been born and 6 puppies that would be saved in a shelter somewhere.

For some people it is not ignorance, they genuinely don't see the damage they are doing.
Especially with people who "just want one litter" or their dog "deserves to be a mother" they just do not realise. Hopefully we can educate people and show them that their dogs do not need to be bred, explain the enormous cost involved with health testing as well as the risks of pregnancy and birth.

I have a black Lab /standard schnauzer mix that we got at a shelter a year ago. 3.5 years old. We are her third home and while we adore her she has been challenging. Very high energy. She was an escape artist as well. We exercise her a lot and have been through 3 obedience classes with her as well as changing our landscaping a bit. We had to be very committed to solving these issues with her to make her a safe and positive member of our family. We are there now. I loved her from the moment I saw her and she is very loyal and loving back. Looks like a lab only with higher set ears and a cute scruffy beard. Has the schnauzer personality not the lab. She is a lot of dog and we had to adjust our home and lifestyle to her as did our purebred lab.

Dogdays, you are the reason I do like mixed breeds.
When people adopt them from shelters it gives them another chance at life.

Schnauzy is our favourite breed, my son and me. I am seeing them more so in town, the standard breed. All around dog, used during the war for their terrier intellligence, along with Airedales. During the first world war they were called the
Thinking man's dog'; this probably means because the breed can second guess, and I think they could have.

They are worth a small fortune for the working person here. Probably $700 800 dollars for a registered pup. I am keeping my eyes open in the shelters though and may come up with a terrier mix, or quite possible a Schnauzer for us again. It doesn't necessarily have to be a pup, our previous Schnauzer was a rescue my son and I made, and she was already seven when we got that lovely lady, as with our Walker hound, taffy.

Anyway, I am thinking of adopting a lab boxer mix, sad story, this lady moved to the Town I live in and she was selling Laboxers on Kijiji, I would not support this type of thing, but I ran across the add on my daily searches for.. well... anything. Anyway, she stated in her add she had 6 wonderful "Vet checked and approved" Laboxers, LOL and this is a quote: "pure bred Boxer and Lab pup only $600.00 each". I know it's not funny, but I do find it funny how she claims to have pure bred mixed breed. :s anyway, a month or so later I was in our local SPCA dropping of some dog food, and doing the usual walk around (I try to go once a week to take some of the dogs for a walk) and I saw some new arrivals, can you imagine my surprise when I saw 5 PURE BRED LABOXERS there?
Yup apparently the woman dropped them off along with the Mama, saying it wasn't her dog, she found it running loose in her yard, decided to take the dog in and feed her, when she realized she was pregnant, well her son amazingly developed allergies, and along with the 3 cats they already have, she couldn't afford to take on more mouths to feed.
So... even though Lady has shown some doggy aggression before, the trainer that I am using seems to think she would be OK with puppies, as my girl was a product of a puppy mill her self, so this week end we are going down to see how she gets on with one of them.
Anyway, that's my story, sorry it's so long!

Pure bred Lab Boxers. I don't think so. They would need to come with papers, recognizing the sire and dam and be recognized by the American Kennel Club, and after that the Canadian Kennel Club. Do you know how difficult it is to get new breeds recognized. It takes years !

I hope you are kidding, Alty, a pics would do no good, I mean, they may be a lovely looking animal, but that is that as it could go.

I am looking for another dog. Walking + dog + my son + and me is something we used to do every day, but my Walker hound is ailing, has a torn ligament in her hind leg and is l2 years old. She is out of the picture entirely and can't even manage short walks now. She is okay around the house and still gets out to do her business, eats and is well loved.

To bad you are in the US.

AHh nope I am in CANADA!
I am in NS actually.
That is too bad about your WH, it's so hard to see them get that way. My oldest Staffy is 10 now, and has already had 2 surgeries on his knee, (torn ligamints) and because has become quite obese. :(
But he still enjoys swimming in the summer and the short walks that he can manage. He is a major couch potato now.
Do you have any pics of your hound?
