AP phone records secretly taken by Justice Department
Why should anyone be surprised... after all the architect of the Fast and Furious scheme to arm the Mexican Drug lords by the Obama administration was all but given a free pass by the press.

Justice Department secretly obtained AP phone records | Fox News

But then... why should we care... these same people have a total disregard for our Second Amendment rights... and their First Amendment rights are no more precious or important.

Those are the last people I'd trust... You don't get elected Dog catcher without being an accomplished liar.

I'm waiting for the outrage from the rest of the drive by media that's been protecting their Messiah. Because the AP was one of them.

Uh oh, when Obama's lost the media who does he have left?

    Quote:

52 media groups protest DOJ's Associated Press action

More than 50 major media organizations on Tuesday sent a letter to the Department of Justice protesting the seizure of two months of The Associated Press’ phone records and calling for the department to “mitigate the damage it has caused.”

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and Deputy Attorney James M. Cole, the organizations — which include POLITICO and Allbritton Communications Company — ask that the DOJ return the secretly subpoenaed phone records and explain how government lawyers “overreached so egregiously in this matter.”

The department should also announce any other pending media-related subpoenas and publicly disclose additional information about who has had access to the AP phone records, the groups wrote.

“The scope of this action calls into question the very integrity of Department of Justice policies toward the press and its ability to balance, on its own, its police powers against the First Amendment rights of the news media and the public’s interest in reporting on all manner of government conduct, including matters touching on national security which lie at the heart of this case,” the letter from The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and 51 other news organizations including Advance Publications, Cox Media Group, The McClatchy Company, The New York Times Company and NPR, among many others, stated.

The media organizations also noted that no one could “remember an instance where such an overreaching dragnet for newsgathering materials was deployed by the Department, particularly without notice to the affected reporters or an opportunity to seek judicial review” in the 30 years since the department issued guidelines about its subpoena practices for journalists’ phone records.
Carney was busy once again yesterday telling us the White House has no idea what happens in his own executive agencies. When someone asked if other media outlets had been the target of his DoJ he told them they'd have to ask Holder, so someone did. Holder isn't sure how many times they've seized reporter's records.

Yeah that Obama really knows how to govern. Nobody knows who does what which begs the question, who's running the show? Jon Stewart's not impressed.

Oh, in answer to my first question Media Matters is still in the tank for Obama. I guess media doesn't really matter to them but then again they're probably the most loyal agency in the Obama administration.

You have been saying that for years even when he was re elected. Your noise will die down soon, and you will look loony again. Not that you that won't make you stop hollering.

Why aren't you hollering for sexual assault victims in the military? Meals on wheels? The rising cost of disaster relief? Naw can't do that because all you can holler about is your rights and the ones you think that others don't deserve.

Keep hollering if that's all you know to do.

Why isn't the left whining about the people getting Killed in Chicago by other lefties thugs?

Because OBAMA, the White House and the IRS have been caught breaking the laws and violating civil rights... is a way bigger and way more important thing than some clueless horny guy hitting up on women that aren't interested.

THe fact Obama refuses to call Ft Hood an act of Islamic Terrorism and still insistst if workplace violence despite the fact it Was a Islamic Loon chanting to his Pedophile god as he was shooting people.

I get it, you guys follow this pattern - if I'm not hollering about the things you're interested in it means I don't really care I'm just stirring up crap. Am I right? Can I get an amen?

Why aren't you hollering about Planned Parenthood and NARAL showing no regard for the children who were victims of Gosnell?

Why aren't you hollering about the ever-ballooning cost of Obamacare?

Why arren't you hollering about the IRS abusing their power, trying to sway the outcome of elections, intimidating conservatives, trashing first amendment rights?

Why aren't you hollering about the DoJ undermining the first amendment, not only in regard to the media but trampling on free speech on virtually every college campus?

Why aren't you hollering about the Benghazi coverup, or HHS extorting money from those they regulate?

You obviously don't care that we're being scammed, lied to, cheated on and abused by our own government because you certainly won't holler about it in the face of overwhelming evidence. But like I said don't worry, I've got your back if you aren't concerned about your rights.

More likely then is that phone calls to or from the cloak room to or from the press gallery were included in the logs that the DOJ compiled... Although it wouldn't surprise me if they have the content of the conversations too.

And the phones in the Press gallery belong to Congress... NOT the Press, the press only uses them... that means they wiretapped Congresses phones as Congressmen use those from time to time to.

So there is ALSO a gross violation of the separation of powers as well.

You alone are saying it didn't happen. THe only thing that hasn't happened yet are the criminal trials for the involved parties... but only you are doubting any of these things happened. Not even Obama is claiming they never happened./

Its only you guys who are calling for him to go to jail, as most of us hope he enjoys his retirement. Personally I think his only fault is the lack of clarity in the procedure. All the 501c3 and 4 groups should be investigated the same way in my opinion, and if there are so many more of them to process, then hire more people.

The hubris continues, but sadly for Obama this time the media isn't playing along. In trying to pander to the media today he tried to renew his bid for a shield law to protect journalists. No, really. The day after it gets out that his administration ignored the laws already in place to protect journalists he asks for another law to protect journalists... as if the law was ever a roadblock to Obama. It's not even a speed bump to these guys.

The Society for Professional Journalists isn't buying it.

    Quote:

But like lovers spurned too many times before, advocates of a free and open press, as well as First Amendment lawyers, chucked the teddy bear in the garbage and tossed the roses down the drain.

“It is a blatantly political move,” said Sonny Albarado, president of the Society of Professional Journalists. “I don’t know why anyone would think that this would appease those of us who are outraged. I think it is curious that the administration pushed for this the day after—the day after!—it got a black eye for secretly going around obtaining journalists’ work product.”

The media shield law will be introduced by New York Sen. Chuck Schumer at the request of the White House.

"This kind of law would balance national security needs against the public's right to the free flow of information,” said Schumer in a statement. “At minimum, our bill would have ensured a fairer, more deliberate process in this case.”

“When I heard this came out of the White House, I went, ‘Yeah, so?’” said Lucy Dalglish, the dean of the Journalism School at the University of Maryland and someone who has pushed for a federal shield law for years. “They think, ‘Oh well, we threw this bone to them before and it sort of kept them happy.’ Give me a break. This doesn’t pass the smell test.”

The reason DoJ snooped on the AP? Version one from Holder:

    Quote:

“I’ve been a prosecutor since 1976, and I have to say that this is among, if not the most serious – it’s in the top two or three – most serious leaks that I’ve ever seen,” Holder added. “It put the American people at risk. And that is not hyperbole.”
And now for the real reason, the AP stole their thunder.

    Quote:

For five days, reporters at the Associated Press had been sitting on a big scoop about a foiled al-Qaeda plot at the request of CIA officials. Then, in a hastily scheduled Monday morning meeting, the journalists were asked by agency officials to hold off on publishing the story for just one more day.

The CIA officials, who had initially cited national security concerns in an attempt to delay publication, no longer had those worries, according to individuals familiar with the exchange. Instead, the Obama administration was planning to announce the successful counterterrorism operation that Tuesday.

AP balked and proceeded to publish that Monday afternoon. Its May 2012 report is now at the center of a controversial and broad seizure of phone records of AP reporters’ home, office and cellphone lines. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said the unauthorized disclosure about an intelligence operation to stop al-Qaeda from detonating explosives aboard a U.S. airliner was among the most serious leaks he could remember, and justified secretly obtaining records from a handful of reporters and editors over a span of two months.

Now, some members of Congress and media advocates are questioning why the administration viewed the leak that led to the May 7 AP story as so grave.

    ...

So the AP was cooperative and held back until there were no more security concerns. Then the CIA asked for one more day until Obama could tout his national security cred - AND - avoid a story that contradicted his message that all was well.

    Quote:

AP’s story about the foiled plot was at odds with the calming message the White House had been conveying on the eve of the first anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden. On April 30, the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying that there was “no indication of any specific, credible threats or plots against the US tied to the one-year anniversary of Bin Laden’s death.”
CIA then offered a compromise, if they would wait another day they would give the AP a one hour scoop with no official confirmation. While the Ap was discussing it amongst themselves, the White House came back and said no dice to that, they would offer a five minute scoop.

The rest is history, and even after trying to be cooperative DoJ went after their phone records. Lesson from the White House? Don't scoop Obama or we'll come after you.

    Lesson from AP? Payback's a b*tch.

Eric Holder ,in testimony admitted that not only is the Justice Dept having difficulty finding a written record of him recusing himself from the AP case ,but more likely a written record doesn't exist. So all we have is his word when he says he's recused himself from the investigation.
