I think history teaches us all if you do nothing when dictators and depots seize power bad things happen. But yeah.. pre WW1, Europe was a significantly LESS friendly place than it is today (relatively speaking) Same with UK, Brutal British oppression of the Irish, and Scotts as well and the general unpleasantness of Germany under the Kaiser is why my ancestors (grandparents actually) left there after the turn of the century.

I go back even further to the Roman Empire that set the stage for a tribal, at the time Europe, and the early interactions of the Middle East and Asia, Africa, which points to my point humans are idiots in general, and have been for a really long time, since before we crawled out of our caves. The story has been basically unchanged in domination of land and resources and trade monopoly despite the rapid evolutions in technology and social changes. You can pick darn near any era in human history with any "tribe" and see that same pattern repeat itself over and over again. Like we NEVER learn.
