It's the plague!

It seems the plague, otherwise known as the black death, is making a comeback and in the most unlikely of places, the US of A and in the western states. There is a correlation with the rate of new arrivals and that is not to say that people are carriers but after the ebola scare we don't need this one. Want to avoid this one, I suggest you go to someplace very hot or very cold, which means I don't have to move

Of all the epidemics in history this one has the scariest reputation but fortunately we have moved on in personal hygene since those days but we do have one unfortunate traint, we like to live with pets and something else likes to live with our pets, the flea

Which is forgetting the fact that it is a bacterial infection that is treatable with Antibiotics. Given that there hasn't been many, and there is still more cases of deadlier infectious diseases out there in the USA, it isn't unusual or unexpected that the doctors aren't sure how to treat the disease or how it presents. As well as medical insurance/medicaid/obama care/private medical is usually a HUGE excuse for these people to NOT seek medical help, it isn't surprising that that are deaths.

This is fear mongering. This is keeping people afraid for any and all reasons. This is the typical media glorification of a public interest story that, instead of saying look at how good science is that we're managing a grim specter from the past, is trying to convince us how incredibly screwed we are. We're not. This is a non-issue.

So, Clete, what are you REALLY trying to get at here? Obama Care?

Yeah Clete "Where's the Beef"? Speaking of OB'care, I just had my co-pay go up 45% on a prescription.

No I'm waiting for the next "war" to be declared. As to beef is that corn fed or grass fed? Yes it will be interesting to see how Obamacare handles an epidemic on home ground

Obama would think its appropriate to try to tax it into submission... then blame Bush if that didn't work.

I was just thinking Ebola was handled by evacuating cases in US citizens to the US, bringing the disease home with the victim, but in this case it is already home meaning a shorter flight to CDC and no emotional outcry, but one Ebola case in the US was the source of a public outcry, how come more cases of the "Black Death" hasn't raised a ripple. I'm also wondering when the first case will step off the plane here

Oh there was more than one ebola case dragged back here and yes there was a significant outcry.

Obama feels it wasn't fair the USA didn't have its share of serious diseases running rampant in the population...so he does his best to import some.

HA HA! Not a great comparison, no provision for dead blacks in Obamacare, but I thought you guys considered Obama a serious disease

There isn't going to be an epidemic. It is an easily manageable disease.

The region for the most recent cases are the same .... only one east coast case (in Georgia) .

Like I said at the start a correlation with tehe flow of illegals, close the border and you solve the problem

They have been flowing here for centuries Clete, from the south, and everywhere else for that matter. Can't we just give out antibiotics and shots as needed? Why panic over a few case?

back in the rational ole days, immigrants were screened for disease ,at places like Ellis Island ,before admission.

Para can you ever write something that is good news. We have much better immunities now. Better hygiene. Better ways of coping. We don't have disease and filth running in our streets, nor do we have a flea population that devastated Europe because we don't actually sleeps with our livestock any more.

Hey, I don't run the news cycle. You say you don't want bad news, well I suggest you get off the bus because there aren't many good news stories unless you count the Pope offering forgiveness for abortion for a limited time. I notice our out spoken abortion abolitionists avoided that one. There is no reason we cannot discuss something. Okay you say we have better hygene, etc, so all the more reason we should ask, how come so many cases are recorded in a particular region? And I make no apology for asking the question.

I am still stuck on how this is even an issue.

I have had bowel movements that are more important then this crap.

Not quite , The Northern Europe migration occurred in the mid 19th century ...and yes it was less controlled subject to the abuses you mention. By the early 20th century between 1905 and 1914, an average of one million immigrants per year arrived in the US. Two-thirds of those individuals emigrated from eastern, southern and central Europe.

The policy was that immigrants had to be healthy and MUST have some money because the government did not want immigrants who were going to be dependents on the state . Usually they needed around $25 bucks . Ellis Island was used as a hospital for people who could recover . But about 2% were denied admission for various reasons.

After 1924 ,immigration was restricted and most processing occurred over seas .

It really doesn't matter where immigrants come from. There should be a rational screening system that does NOT award people who violate the admission requirements . I work with many natives of India . They follow the rules for themselves and their families that follow them. I often joke and ask them why are they going through so much trouble ? Why not just get a plane ticket to Mexico city ?

Yes we all have those but it is an issue to someone otherwise it wouldn't get airplay. It is newsworthy only because of recent deaths and not so recent epidemics

I think it rates higher than a bowel movement. Also I see it has 28 responses and that is certainly higher than a daily movement. Just my take.

My Grandfather came here due to that famine. He managed before he died even though he was never rich...

Perhaps we should have sent them to Canada instead.

Just to set the record straight I did not start "The Bowel Movement" comment, it was mentioned by CRAVEN. I was just trying to upgrade the Plague to something higher than their bowel movement. It seems like everyone is not entitled to an opinion on here, if it does not meet certain peoples standards. Tickle maybe you should read before you jump on people.

So to answer my question which was what was to be gained by Smoothies family being migrants to Canada over being migrants to the US? The point was they would not have been treated badly. Cpt Cook didn't find us because we weren't missing. the continent of Australia had been known for centuries. I know the point of being a migrant to Australia although my family came from Ireland long ago as free settlers, not guests of the English king. Australia was populated by free people, no slaves, no slave owners and definitely not miscreants
