In what states is it legal to have a sex with anyone you want at the age of 17?
Anyone you want? You mean like a 13 year old? Can you specify?
Sorry, I mean anyone older.
Lets say a 17 year old was in a relationship (sexual and mental) with someone that was 5+ years older than them,
So, from my understanding, it is legal for a 17 year old to have sex with someone 5+ years older than them, in any state?
Not necessarily. Look at the link I provided.
Not if the age of consent in your state is 18
If you're of the consent age, you can have sex with anyone that is of consent age as well?
So it depends. In Michigan, a 16 year old can have sex with a 80 year-old. However, in some states a 16 y/o may only be able to have sex with those under 18 or 21.Quote:
In some U.S. states a lower age applies when the age gap between partners is small, or when the older partner is below a certain age (usually 18 or 21).
Okay, do you know where I can find out which states its illegal?
Sorry this is so confusing.
Im sure if you type your states name into Google in addition with the words "Age of Consent Rules" you can find what your looking for. But I don't know of any sites that go that much into detail for each state unless you tell me what state you need info for. The only reason I know about Michigan's is because that's where I live, and discussed it in my law classes.
The state I need info for is Minnesota.
First-degree criminal sexual conduct is sexual penetration with a victim under age 13 and an actor more than 36 months older.
Third-degree criminal sexual conduct is sexual penetration with (1) a victim under age 13 and an actor no more than 36 months older or (2) a victim age 13 to 16 and an actor more than 24 months older.
Statutory Rape Laws by State
So as long as you are 17 you will be fine.
Thanks!
What, are you going to move so you can have sex?
State laws differ and they can be complex. In some cases, its simple, if one party is under the age of consent then no one can legally have sex with them. In other states, it depends on the difference between the ages.
Why don't you tell us what state YOU are in and what your real situation is? Instead of playing these games!
Excuse me?
I was asking for information. No need to point fingers. I have everything figured out, so thanks anyway.
Sounds like someone who may be trying to have sex with someone underage and trying to justify it, anytime they are ashamed of their actions are their actions are not proper, they neve want to give details,
If they were not wanting to hide somehting they would have just give details
What's with people being so rude and judgmental? That's not the case at all. Don't assume stuff. I figured out what I needed to know. No need for you to put your two sense in on this. I asked for information not for opinions and judging. If I would have known this site was like this I would have figured information out another way. I'm not an overage person trying to have sex with and underage person. So lets keep the judgmental stuff to yourself.
Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking. If the OP is thinking about moving to a state where the age of consent is lower, there would be the Mann Act to consider. Which prohibits transporting someone across state lines for the purpose of sexual activity.
I really didn't expect the OP to answer my question, because it would probably reveal themselves as planning to have sex with a minor.
Can't a girl ask a question with out being harassed? I was asking a simple question that got confusing. I shouldn't have to explain myself.
Unfortunately I wasn't really thinking about why the question was being asked
Actually yes, you do have to give additional details if you want a correct answer, the laws on age of consent is very confusing.
Plus if the other person is a adult, the girls parents may have other issues and laws they can use against the boy if they are unhappy
This situation has nothing to do with me. It's a friend I am asking for, I have a son and need no such information for myself. Ill give the basics, even though I figured out the information already.
A 17 year old woman has a relationship with a 24 year old woman. The 17 year olds parents are okay with the relationship, and they are accepting of it. The thing I was asking is if its okay for that to happen, being the 17 year old is over the age of consent but under the age of 18.
The question is whether you want an accurate answer or not. That's why I asked the question. When you post a vague, open ended question, we may not be able to provide an accurate answer. So yes, you do have to explain yourself. Especially with an issue like this. Some questions can be simple and answered simply. But you are asking about a very hot button topic. And your secretiveness makes you suspect.
Again, if your question is innocent and academic, then why be so secretive? And why be so defensive when you are called out on it?
So why not ask that? Why be so cryptic? Why ask a question that doesn't really apply?
Again, the answer to that question depends on what state your friend lives in. In some states, your friend could be over the age of consent, but a 7 year difference in ages might override that. Another factor is the relationship between the two. For example, if the 24 yr old is a position of influence (boss, teacher, etc.) then that might trigger a violation of the law.
So you see, giving us the real situation, instead of approaching it sideways, like you did, helps us give you an accurate answer. Without knowing the state we still can't say whether the 24 yr could be in legal trouble.
Scott, they reported the post, guess they missed the part where you and I am two of the three main moderators of this web site.
And we honestly have done this for years, personally I have done this type of web site for over 13 years now, and we can read between the lines when there is something not right most of the time
Because I was just asking about Minnesota. I just needed to know the general law on it. I didn't need to know specifics. You don't need to attack me. Thanks for the information though. I appreciate it but I don't appreciate you two attacking me and being rude to where I'm almost in tears. Ill be deleting my account now. Thanks for the help though.
I'm not attacking you, I'm trying to instruct you on the best way to use this forum.
And no you won't be deleting your account since that's not allowed.
Try looking at it from our position. What you wanted to know was, in Minn, would the 24 yr old get in legal trouble. But that's not what you asked. What you asked was a different question which raised questions about your motives.
So, if you want to know what the answer is, let us know, if you prefer to storm off in a huff because you THINK you were insulted, that's up to you.
