I've had a lot of luck with just the flowers and leaves.
Just splot, splot, splot.. change colors if you want and then go back with your leaf nozzle. Just wiggle it a little left and right and you get a good left.:D
If you feel inclined, you can do some piping around the edge, but that's a pain to get even.

Was that simple enough or too simple?

I do a lot of b/d and weddings.. this always gets raves.. use silk flowers and the pearl strands or any decorative tulle and such! Let your imagination run and have fun with it.
    Hope this helps!

Walmart sells beginers decorating kits cheap. Look at wilton.com With fondant, color some and thin out in a long oval and roll up and curl some edges a quick rose. Green fondant make tear drop and press flat a leaf. No problem. Make 2 long chains twist together and use as border for cake dampen one side of chain to make it stick to cake.

JoAnn fabrics use to have classes for the Wilton cake decorating. I don't know if they still do or not.
I think a lot has to do with the consistency of the icing too when you begin. Like a good creamy cream cheese icing is easier to work with when you are learning than a thinner fluffier icing.
