My house have cedar siding I do like to know if I can add vinal siding over it, if I can how should I do it, or what kind of insulation can I use. Thanks

Before you install vinyl siding over wood clapboard or cedar shingles, consider these important factors

I can't think of a case where siding would be installed directly over cedar shingles...

Vinyl siding must be installed over a flat surface, and to achieve this flat surface with a minimum of work, siding installers generally use a half-inch thick rigid foam board

You can side over the cedar shingles if you wish. You would want to install a layer of what is called fan-fold. Fan-fold comes in different thicknesses. I would ask why you are covering up the shingles. Appearance? Rotting? If it is due to rotting I would remove the shingles. If there is any mold growing on them covering them up will not stop the mold. If there is no mold go ahead... just make sure you use long enough nail to get into the good wood behind the shingles.

If you're going to install vinyl siding over cedar shingles, the first thing you need to do is the following:

1. inspect all areas of the home for rot
2. nail down any and all loose boards.
3. inspect any and all flashing details to be sure there isn't any chance for water penetration.

Now, if you've covered at least the three above and everything looks good and dandy, then sure, vinyl side over your existing cedar siding.

Just a little FYI, it will create a caved in effect to your doors and windows. Reason being, your adding more layers and increasing the thickness of your exterior walls. If this isn't done right by a professional siding contractor, you could make a good siding product look like crap!

As a siding contractor in Massachusetts, I push to have all existing siding removed. Reason for this, you can properly inspect any all damage underneath to ensure longevity of the new siding installation.
