    Dell Dimension 340
I'm looking at buying this used PC tower cheap for my wife to do email and a bit of web browsing.

Been trying to look up the year this model was built but can find it anywhere. Can someone tell me where to find this information?

Would be nice to have a full spec sheet on it as well. Couldn't find this info online??

    Thanks...

    Dell Dimension 340

    Specs are:
    Processor 2.4 Ghz.
    Memory 1 GB.
    CD/RW.
    Hard Drive 40GB.

I couldn't either. Dell has all their system info on their web site. Searching by model did not turn up a Dimension 340. Sure it isn't a Precision Desktop 340? If you have access to the computer, use the service tag number on the back to search for exact info on Dell's web site.

    Thanks Scleros,

It's an ad on Craig's List so this is all I know. If there is no such thing as a Dimension 340, it probably IS a Precision 340.

Looked up link you sent, but no info on model year. Any idea how to find that out?

Found in in one of the PDF manuals you suggested above.

    Dec 2002.

And it IS a Precision 340.

    Thanks again for the lead...

Dimension 300 series has been out for at least 3 or 4 years. The key issue, is the CPU to memory ratio. That unit should be fine for what you are planning.

Would you please expound on that a bit? For example, if I have a 2 GHz CPU and 512 MB of memory, the ratio is 2/512 = 0.004 GHz./MB. I just don't see how that is a useful metric for comparing two systems' overall performance. Maybe if one used number of CPUs, i.e. 1 CPU / 512 MB = 0.002 CPUs/MB, where 2 CPU / 512 MB = 0.004 CPUs/MB would be a metric to indicate more CPUs are better, but that could be determined from the CPU count alone, well at least among similar processors. Comparing a multi-core processor with multiple single core processors may not be valid.

    I agree.

The metric does not even take into consideration what GPU is installed which can take work off the CPU.
