    Petting newborn kittens
When will she let me pet them? They came out from their hiding spot for a little while and so I petted one for a little while then she dragged them back under the couch and licked him for at least 30 minutes.

She was licking your scent off her baby. How old are the kittens now?

Leave them alone for now, or she may change her mind about caring for the ones you handle!

The kittens are wandering around already at only a week old? Or did you fish them from under their hiding spot to play with them? Please don't touch them until they are older and Mom Cat says okay!

Nope, blind, on wobbly legs, I don't think they wandered out. They would not leave a safe place yet!

Just remember, do not touch them yet. You will have plenty of time soon, maybe 2 or 3 more weeks, after the mom weans them, to handle them all you want. You will know for sure when this happens because she will be out and about and not wanting anything to do with them. That is when you must find a good kitty food for them, and lots of water. They will play in everything until they find out what it all is. Okay?

It is too bad you didn't have a bed ready for the mom to birth; because this is the greatest part, watching the kittens being born and seeing how they nurse and interact with their mom and siblings.

See, if you hadn't posted, we would not have been able to share this great information?

    Good luck

ThanK you for your info but I did have a bed for her but she didn't use it.could it have been because of the father cat?he stayed under the couch and helped her clean the babies and her.I was lucky enough to catch her having them.but now he won't go under the couch but when the kittens came out he did lick them and run.

Breanne, cats don't have that kind of relationship. Male cats don't help clean newborn kittens. The mother cat eats all of the afterbirth and anything else.

If he's a tom, I'm surprised the queen let him near them (if he was). Methinks it's time for some neutering to be done.

I watched with a flashlight while he helped lick them clean.also she had two one day and there more the next day.one was still born so there's only 4.

You probably saw what you wanted to see, very romantic, but there is only one reason the male would be "licking" the newborns. She was probably too weak to fight him off. You are lucky you have kittens.

Cats don't mate because they like each other, breanne, it is purely nature taking over procreation.

I hope you have plans to get mom cat spayed.

No male or for that matter, any female cat, would have, or will e allowed near them. That is just the way it is, even in the big cat world.

I doubt you're a cat expert and with that attitude I doubt you have any friends either. I'm sorry I asked you.

What attitude? Are you referring to me? Many, many years of having cats, say over the last 60 years has put me in touch adequately with our feline friends.

I never said I was a cat expert, Breanne. But you are obviously off in lala land thinking cats mate because they like each other, which is not the case. Grow up.

I've had cats since I was 10, so for more than 50 years, and tickle is correct. No new mother cat would allow a male (even the father) near her kittens. In fact, it is not unusual for a unneutered male cat to kill newborn kittens, especially if he is not the father.

Cats don't become families like people do.

Well I know what I saw and he was in no way trying to hurt those kittens .he was cleaning them and her;just like he cleans her all the time and she cleans him.so it would seen as though they have to at least like each other.he was a baby when I got him for her and for a while treated her like mom.maybe you've never seen two cats love each other but they do.gr hasn't Reyes to get under that couch since.and when they did come out he licked them to and then walked away so.
