I found my 14 year old cat 2 days ago lying on her side in an unnatural position. When I went up to her I realised she could not move. She would try to meow and that is it. I rushed her to the vet and he said her heart beat was slow and her pupils were fixed and dilated. He said there was nothing he could do for her, so I had him put her down. She was fine earlier that day. I do not understand why this would happen to an appearing fine and healthy cat? Do you have any suggestions what might have happened to her to cause this? She was my baby and I am heartbroken. Was I too hasty to put her to sleep? Should I have had him try to bring her back, would there have been any hope?

She could have had a stroke. My beloved kitty had a blood clot that paralyzed him. He appeared completely healthy up until that point.

Sounds like your cat was well loved. Sounds like you did the humane thing and you shouldn't feel guilty.

Imlaupau. I am very sorry that you lost your cat. I know that you are in pain. Please do not feel guilty it sounds as though you were a kind and loving pet owner,and did what was best for your cat.

She could have had a seizure or something my dog was running around fine then a hour later he had a seizure and never came out so we had to have him put to sleep its heartbreaking I know but its better that the are put to sleep because if it was a bad seizure your cat would have had brain damage hope this helps really soz hun xxxxxx

I'm sorry you lost your friend! I''ve had a rough time with my cat and her kittens. Out of a first litter of six we lost three have health issues with another and almost lost the mother 1 week after the birth. Plus my border collie ran away and my parents lost a beloved 10 uear old Pekingese. I really feel for you. When a pet is hurting such as after a stroke or seizure like yours suffered the most loving thing you can do for them is to put them to sleep. "if you love something, let it go"

Did you take your cat to the vet and did they see that there was a blood clot. Because my cat all of a sudden is limp and won't move only lifts his head to eat, but when I pick him up he feels like he's dead and lets his whole body go. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with him and said he's long way from the end of his life but I don't know what to do because he won't move.

Yes, he was diagnosed by a vet. He was also in a great deal of pain and howled non-stop until they gave him a pain reliever.

What does the vet say about yours?

This could actually be a lot of different things and without an autopsy, you are not likely to know.

But I did want to comment on the "apparent fine and healthy cat" part. Not only could this have been something sudden, but it could even have been something long-lived and ongoing... but cats are very good at hiding things, like pain. It is not unusual at all for the caretaker to not realize that something is going on until something sudden like this happens. So don't beat yourself up over that because it's normal.

And don't beat yourself up questioning what you did. Everyone does what they think was the best thing at the time, based on the only things we know at the time. We're only human and you did what your vet suggested. It's extremely common, especially when we are the ones to have them put down (as opposed to passing on their own), to feel some guilt. It goes with the territory. That might not make you feel any less guilty, or question it any less, but at least you can know that what you're feeling is normal and that a lot of people go through this.

Since you don't even know what happened, it would be difficult to know how you might have prevented it, assuming it could have been prevented. The only thing anyone can really do is take the best care of a pet that they can. You can teach yourself to look out for subtle changes in things, and even then, you can't catch everything because cats will still hide things, and because some things come with no warning.
