To help him buy a car. Dealership told him he was silly. They told him they wouldn’t talk to anyone except the buyer, because of the privacy laws.

Yes you can but why tell a dealer this? Yes that was rather silly. Better to just take a good knowledgeable mechanic with you than pay an attorney to buy a car... unless it's a NEW car.

I don't believe there are any 'privacy laws' regarding car buying. I suppose a dealer can refuse to talk to anyone who isn't the customer for any reason they want, however. It is silly. He gets details about the car and price and takes it to his lawyer if that makes him feel better. He can call in questions while sitting in his lawyer's office.

A well informed car shopper is much better. A lawyer can't be expected to know half of what a smart shopper should know. Scour the net for "How to shop for a car." Use sites like Edmunds and many others for data.

They can be intimidating. But to pay a lawyer is silly and not cost effective. He can take a friend, or a mechanic. If he is intent on an attorney, he takes one under the guise of a friend. The dealership doesn't need to know the profession of the person accompanying him.

I agree... paying a lawyer to buy a car for you actually IS quite silly unless that Lawyer is a personal friend doing it for free.. (I'd go further but I'll leave it there).

As was mentioned.. nothing wrong with having a disinterested person along with you to voice their opinion to you. In fact doing that is a good idea.

I always have someone go with me, to buy a car, if I like a car, there job is to tell me, (out loud) bad things, to make it sound like we don't want a car there. To make them deal better. The other person says there was a better deal at another dealership and so on.

Also never go to this dealership, and to be honest, if they refused to give you copies of the paper work, that is often illegal and they need to be reported to the BBB, to the city licensing department and also to the state that license car dealers.

Thank you. Poor people. The contract is seven pages long. He must sign it at the car dealership first.He cannot leave the dealership to read the contract at home.

In very rare cases would I get financing at the dealer. That's where you could easily get taken to the cleaners. Check other banks or credit unions first.

And when in doubt... walk away. There is always another car and another dealer.

All credit contracts have a 3 day right od rescission. So he can take it home to review.


As for buying a car with dealer financing, you will often get a better price because the dealer gets a kick back. In most cases you can pay off the loan with your own financing without penalty.
