2004 Honda Civic LX Automatic transmission problems
MY 04 Honda civic has been making ticking/clicking sound. It doesn't make the sound when the car is idle. Or when the clutch is pressed on. Only when the clutch is released. As the car goes faster the sound gets faster. People are telling me it may be the throw out bearing but wouldn't it be the opposite? It would make the noise if there was pressure applied on the clutch only? I am confused. Maybe it's the clutch plate. HELP?

    Thanks

Sounds more like a bad constant velocity (CV) joint (clicking sound). Check the joint on the passenger side--they normally go first. Look for a split boot and grease slung all over the place. If this is the case, you will likely need to install a new or remanufactured "half axle."

Test: In a large parking lot, turn your steering wheel all the way to the right, shift into reverse, and then start going backwards in a small circle. The noise should be even more pronounced, if it's a constant velocity joint problem.

Remember to change your transaxle fluid every 30,000 miles, when it's hot. I recommend you use Amsoil Synthetic 5W-30 Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF). It normally takes slightly less than 2 quarts.

I believe it's a CV joint problem and not a transmission problem, because I've never known someone to have a problem with their Civic manual transmission. They are extremely reliable, even after 150,000 miles. That's why most people in the world buy Hondas with manual transmissions. The U.S. is the main market for automatics. They are torque goblers and I would never buy a small car with an ATX.

I have the same problem with a 5 speed in a 2004 Civic DX. An excellent transmission mechanic told me it sounds like a torque bearing I believe he called it, and it's deep in the transmission which requires complete disassembly. He said it would be more cost effective to just replace it than rebuild it. Also, sometimes when I'm pulling out of a parking lot or somewhere and the wheel is turned hard to the right, the sound will go away for most of 1st gear but comes back before shifting.

Maybe it's a pinion bearing? I don't remember what he called it, but it's in the center of the transmission and that's why it's so expensive to replace.
