*hugs* love you all
You guys working on anything? All I am working on is summer fun. I got to tell you guys a little something, I thought ohhhh ART... right when this happened.
We were outside finishing up the "sparklers" from fourth of July and we were walking in... I bent down and there he was a pretty Dragon Fly. I said boys look, isn't he beautiful?
I wanted to go and get the camera right away but he got startled and then I said Jett, did he touch you when he flew away? I asked one more time and when he turned around I could see why he wasn't speaking... the DragonFly landed right smack dab in the middle of his lips... He stayed there for more than 30 or 40 seconds! Ohhhhh I wanted a picture of that so bad. But he flew away and then we all just laughed in astonishment... THAT WAS COOL! ;) Hope you all are having a great summer. Hugs to you too Cal!
Hopefully, a unique opportunity like that for a great picture will present itself again, starty!
Thanks for the good wishes, I am hoping it will come to be true. It would have been a great pic. What have you been working on clough?Quote:

THIS IS SO FASCINATING...
Drawing of a woman from the inside out... INCREDIBLE!!

Well, that certainly was interesting, Jan! Sort of looked like the artist of that kept changing his/her mind a number of times as far as what was being created.
That is done trough the computer? That was very neat. Thanks Reb!
Yes, I am sure it was done through the computer. Not sure how. It was just neat to me to see it begin as a spine and skull, bones, then muscle, then flesh then clothes. There were a few moments in there I was not sure this would be appropriate to show here but then as it kept developing, it just showed a lot of creativity, I thought, on the part of the person doing it.Quote:

The creativity in some people just astounds me. Hope this was okay to share here even though it had it's moments. LOL :o :o :o
I agree, looked like the artist did have a number of ideas running through his/her mind before the finished product.Quote:

Fascinated me though to see the spine, skull and the development from that point, kept me guessing a lot to the end. :p
I peeked in the Art subject before, but couldn't answer any or the questions. Now I find that y'all are willing to see our own art... I'm going to try and see if I can manage to post 1 here. (This old pencil drawing of Mel Blount is the only one of my art I have on my 'puter - it was scanned >10 yrs ago w/ Win95 and has some pixel errors.)

Yes, talent and ability are abounding in you! Thanks for posting an image of what you did, WVHiflyer! :)
Yeah, I agree with the others it is pretty great. What intensity in his eyes, in the set of his mouth... lol I would hate to have that staring at me from the other side of the line.
Thanks y'all. I needed that. :o I'm trying to make some extra cash selling this type but I just don't know how to market myself. I've always had a prob setting a price on my art. I can draw anything but the handicap is that I need pics to do it (Blount was from 2 newspaper pics).
startover22 - who's your team?
Thanks again.

jrebel7, who do many types of art, also does pencil drawings and sells them. I'm sure that she could give you a clue as to how much you might be able to sell yours that you produce that you would like to sell.
One thing that I would like to caution you about though, is that if you are indeed copying images from another source, and then selling what you have produced, there might be possible copyright issues there, even though what you have produced are not are exact replicas of the images.
I have been in love with the Patriots for a very long time now...Quote:

I can't help but to think how amazing these players are. It doesn't really matter what team it is, I just really like a good game. On the other hand, I would hate to see the Pats loose or the Hawks! Nice work again, sure talent there in your artwork!

Copyright information
While I was at the Met in New York, there were artists set up on the floor, copying the Master Artist's famous work. As long as they did not use the exact size of canvas that the original painting was painted on, the piece was considered their own work.
A lot of artist's view a photo and work from that but the art creation is a different medium, size, and each artist has their own style so it is not a "COPY" of the original. You would not be allowed by law to have reprints of the photograph made and sell them but your rendition of the photo is your own.
I was commissioned to do a drawing of a photograph that had been in a Newspaper in another state. I was going to do a write up after posting on my web site so called the newspaper to see what was legal for me to use from their article. The gal told me I could not copy it word for word, nor could I use any details that would not have been public knowledge at the onset of the story but I could use information such as city, state, general description of incident and not be in breech of copyright. There was no problem with my using their photograph from the newspaper.
I know this does not answer your question of copyright but hope it helps in some way. You have an amazing talent, that hopefully you will develop and hope you won't let the concern of copyright be a stumbling block but instead research a bit more, call an attorney if there is a series of drawings you are wanting to do of sports players, for example, from photographs and usually attorneys will give a free on phone consultation of general information if it is not lengthy.
I am not encouraging you to just not worry about the issues of copyright, but goodness, with such talent, check it out with an attorney so will know your boundaries legally then go full steam ahead. :)
I don't know how much information the following link would be to you but looks like might be worth a try to get you started on getting more comfortable regarding selling your art work done by looking at a photograph that probably is copyrighted. Much success to you in finding information and please post more of your work.
Get a Copyright - LegalZoom
jrebel7 - thanks for the info. That was basically my understanding of drawing from photos, but to be safe I've been flying a bit under the radar (like going into bars andm after checking w/ bartender, peddling to patrons - mostly during football season <G>) I'll check those sites - couldn't before because of no access. I donated a few ftbl pics and some wildlife watercolors to my lake club's women's club for them to try and sell. They occasionally show up on e-bay (and she was going to try another similar site too). Shouldn't be a problem legally since I didn't make any money. (Hope)
Thanks again for the encouragement. Now if I can only get it together to get a scanner. The one I used on my old 386 wouldn't even load on W95...

I understand why you felt the need to fly under the radar, so to speak! :pQuote:

Try to find a printer that does Giclee prints. It is the closest print that you will find to your original. The inks are archival inks, last 100 years, printed on acid free paper, like watercolor paper or handmade paper. I go to my printer with my original piece, unmatted, unframed, sealed with a spray sealer, he then scans the piece and burns me a CD with a .tif and .jpg file image. He keeps the image under my file on his computer so anytime I need prints I can just e-mail or call and tell him how many, what size, if I want black and white or sepia or color, etc. I have small, large, medium prints made of the same piece, note cards with my work on them, book marks with my work on them. He even printed out a portfolio sheet with thumbnail (a little larger than) print of each piece. I had him print out black and whites on one sheet and color on another. They can then be laminated. In order to get into a very specific show I had to produce either my work or a portfolio. My daughter picked up my two sheets, took them, they were judged and I was accepted the first year I applied. If a person gets in to this show, they can pretty much show at any show in the area with out going through all the acceptance stuff. I have a lot of my black and white drawings printed out in Sepia. Makes the piece come alive a little bit, more warmth. When I get the prints I have ordered at a later time, I spray each one with a sealer (not notecards) and let them dry before putting each in a clear bag with a seal. If I am not framing a piece, then I go to local Hobby Store and have them cut a piece of cardboard, just an inch or so larger than the piece with or without mat, purchase roll of shrink wrap. I tape it with packaging tape all around on the back side then use a blow dryer and it shrinks and no wrinkles, piece is protected, nice, clean, neat, ready to sell. The beauty of having a printer do your work like this is that he can do the prints, usually within a day or two so you don't have a lot invested in inventory and don't have to store a lot of inventory.
I won't go on... but hope I have given you some info you can use! :)
I just checked out some of the other postings... so many do such great stuff. Among my favs were some of work of chek101 (paintings are great!), grammadidi, jrebel7, templelane...
How many sell or do most of y'all do it for enjoyment?

Hi there!
I do mainly commission work. I use to do a few art shows a year but have cut it down to one a year that I mentioned in earlier post since it is the "Big Daddy" of them all. I display some of my work, have prints, cards, bookmarks but also have a web site. I only have my pencils on it now. My son is designing it and he is one busy little guy so progress is slow but sure!!
I enjoy the commission work more than any of the other. The others you mentioned in your post are amazing artists. I hope they see your post soon and can also share their experience with you! :)
The image is one of my displays. I have two different types, depending on where I display.
To answer your question in the last sentence, I always tell people that I do my drawings for the enjoyment of it. If they sell, it is just icing on the cake. I have already received joy from just creating the piece! (Don't get me wrong, cash is nice and rewarding. It sort of validates me as an artist in the public eye but I would do the pieces whether they sell or not. People tell me to draw what sells in this area. I tell them, I draw what moves me and inspires me. If it sells... as I say... icing!Quote:

Concerning the marketing of what you might like to sell, WVHiflyer, I can definitely help you with that, if you would like to know how to do it...
BG, I just read a link today stating an artist should never explain an art piece. I understood what they were saying but I have to say that some art pieces do stand best with no explanation but allow the viewer to draw their own conclusion but hope you feel it is OK for me to share a bit about the drawing you mentioned, the dog and the girl. The piece is called, "Ultimate Trust". The dog had been tied to a stop sign with a rope and shot in the upper part of the nose with a .22 bullet. The dog chewed it's way loose, crawled to a dry creek bed and fell in. Duncan was discovered and taken to a Veterinarian Clinic. I was contacted to do a commission drawing of one of the workers at the clinic and Duncan. The story hit the front page of the paper where the people live that commissioned it. The man's wife worked at the clinic. Offers came from all over the place to adopt Duncan, money poured in to pay for Duncan's care. Duncan is now alive and well!! When I create a piece, I sometimes write a little one page fictional story about it or just give my thoughts on the piece. I named it "Ultimate Trust" because I know that little precious dog, had to relearn to trust and the employees at the clinic surely instilled that trust back into that dog. When animals or people are hurt, the physical scars heal fairly quickly for the most part but sometimes, the injuries to the spirit take more time. I felt that the look on Duncan's face expressed "Ultimate Trust". Thank you for sharing that you liked it.
Jrebel look at his eyes they show trust not only that but the way he allows her to hold him. That makes me cry... I know that look because, I have animals that have that same look... they also let out a sigh a special sigh.. so often one of my dogs will lay their head on my lap, across my leg or across the top of my feet and let out that "sigh" like they know they are safe, they are home and will never be hurt or hungry again.
To me that look and sigh is better than a wag of a tail any day.. but hey I like wags too... ok now mine are going on their 3rd walk of the day... all of this sappy dog talk.
BG, you have such a loving heart! People who love their pets, generally are just warm and loving people and make great friends. I count you as one of mine! :pQuote:

Clough - I'd appreciate any help in that area. Either post here or send by e-mail. Thanks!

Will do, WVHiflyer! Some of the more recent stuff that I have posted about marketing is floating around in other posts on this site - so, will have to search for them. In the meantime, you might want to check out the following old posts to give you some initial ideas. Most of the information that is on them concerning marketing could easily be used for the marketing of just about any business or goods.Quote:

Sean, are you working on any art projects now?? Waiting to see your next one! :)
WOW! Truly amazing my fellow arteest! You sound exactly like me... I do my best work from pictures as well. One idea I had was that if you have a camera, you can take your own photos of whatever inspires you (at the moment, for me, it's big old trees with twisting bows and the no leaves and look) and draw from them-that way, it really is unique and your own inspiration, yet you still drew it from a picture.Quote:

Tonight I put an ad on Craig's List and I'd like to know what y'all think.
[Pittsburgh; Services; Creative; Portraits (people or pets)]
Hi again, WVHiflyer!
I did find your ad on craigslist for the Pittsburgh, PA area. My initial response is that it would help if you had more information about you in it in order to be credible and trustworthy of potential customers. I would like to work with you on this, but, we must be careful to word things on this site so that they don't appear to be advertising on this site. This is going to take some time because we all aren't on here at the same time and also we all have our individual obligations outside of this site.
You did a good, initial job of placing an ad. It's taken me over three years of work to know how and where to place ads on the Internet. I have become good enough at placing ads so that they get great exposure when people do searching for things on the Internet, that I have made doing that for people one of my businesses.
Please don't be afraid of putting your first and last name as well as your complete contact information like, phone number and email address. Your home or studio address probably isn't as important at this point since you are just starting with the advertising. But, people do need to be able to contact you in a number of ways, and not just by the anonymous way on craigslist.org. You could even post some images of what you have done on craigslist.org in order to gain business. I have posted images on craigslist in order to advertise for some groups that I advertise for locally around where I live.
You will get the hang of this concerning the advertising. As I have already stated in a number of places on this site, most of my business comes from the free ads that I have placed on the Internet. Because of that, I am thinking of getting rid of my ads in the Yellow Pages of the local phone book because the Internet has worked out so much better for me!
Here are a few of suggested re-titles of your ads for starts:
Pittsburgh, PA Area Portrait Artist Available for Hire
Portrait Artist Available for Work in the Pittsburgh, PA Area
People or Pet Portraits Drawn in the Pittsburgh, PA Area
Pittsburgh Area Artist Draws People or Pets to your Specifications
Just some ideas...
Am looking forward to working with you on this!
Thanks!
we are now starting on our final art project for this year (yr 12s only do 3 terms instead of 4, and then just exams)Quote:
