I am not a plumber, so I have a question about what I need to do:

I have a main pipe header coming down to a valve manifold. The header is 1 1/2" pipe with no threads on it, the manifold has a 1" pipe on it with no threads. I need to join these two together, but am struggling with the best way to accomplish this.

My original plan is to weld a coupling to the manifold with a 1" female end, then buy a swage nipple that has a male 1" thread and a 1 1/2" plain end. I would then attach the 1" thread to the coupling, then run the header pipe down to the plain end of the swage nipple and weld. This doesn't seem "adjustable enough".

Any other suggestions on how to do this? I don't want to cut pipes later if I find there is a leak, and have to troubleshoot.

What kind of pipe is it and what is the manifold made of?
