View Full Version : John deere LX255 cranks OK, but backfires and won't start

My LX255 was running fine then started sputtering like running out of fuel. I headed for the garage and it seemed to recover on the way. I shut it off and confirmed there was plenty of fuel in the tank. A while later, while still warm, it started OK and I mowed a little more. Now, three days later I found the broken spring described in an earlier post, and it cranks but then backfires and will not start. Are the broken spring and the failure to start related, or two separate issues? I checked the spark plug and it seems to be OK. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I think they are separate issues. Already replied to the spring issue. Your machine has a Kohler engine and I would think you may well have sheared the flywheel key. Kohlers do not like to be shut off with the engine revved. If you have a habit of doing this, then I say you have slowly sheared the key. Best to idle them down for about 20 seconds before shut down
Peace,
Clarke
