What are my rights as a tenant if my landlord sells the house they are renting to me? My contract is valid until 11/2012. For six months they tried to sell the house but were not successful. For those six months I had strangers walking through my unit. My landlord finally took it off the market in 11/2011 and said they were not going to put it back on the market for several more years. Now suddenly I get a call today that a next door neighbor may want to buy it.

If the neighbor buys it can he force me out before my contract is up? Please let me know. Thanks for your help.

If you have a written lease then a new owner has to honor it. They don't have to renew it but they can't evict you before it expires just because they want to move in.

If they want to move in that badly, you can tell them they can buy out the balance of your lease if they pay you 2 or 3 months rent plus moving expenses.

It is possible the neighbor has seen it for sale and since it was taken off the market thinks they may sell it cheaper now. But he has the right to sale the house if he wants.

In most areas you have the right to stay and the new owner has to honor the written lease. And normally as noted if they want you out sooner, they may try to buy out your lease.
