I feel like Iv'e known him forever, and whenever I think about him I smile. My best friends all tell me he's weird, and that I should't hang out with him, because I'm popular and he isn't at all. He is probably as confused as you are. Talk together, lead the conversation. It sounds like you both are kind of shy, and you would love him to take the lead.

That's why you have to talk and reasure him you are there and will follow his lead (to a reasonable point of course :D). Nothing weird but reasonable.
