I purchased this Acer laptop last night, already it has shut down 4 times with arror message :

I think this is a bad sign that I have a defective computer and feel I should bring it back to the store..

Seriously as it's that new, take it back and demand a replacement.

Depending on how old it is... If its new, have it replaced otherwise just backup your info and reload it.
ACER has a recovery partition that will completely reload your system to it's original state.

Click Start -> All Programs -> Acer "eRecovery Manager"

Follow the prompts to completely restore the laptop without saving your Data.
Pressing Alt+F10 during start up at the ACER screen logo will also access the recovery partition.
