I have a 2000 chevy impala and the transmission shift moves without pressing the break pedal and the car does not move

There is some disconnect between the shifter and the transmission. Not sure if this model uses a cable or linkage. I'd check that first. You can see the shift linkage from under the hood where it goes into the transaxle. Something is disconnected or broken.
