Scientists are working on the holy grail of producing meat by growing cells in a factory. They think they can solve the world's famine problems by cutting the supply chain.
'Pain-free meat': how synthetic sausages could be on our plates in six months (http://www.smh.com.au/technology/sci-tech/painfree-meat-how-synthetic-sausages-could-be-on-our-plates-in-six-months-20110909-1k0nj.html)
So, what do you think? when you have that weiner roast or BBQ, will what you eat be real?
I can see that everyone will think it's a great idea after all think of the impact on greenhouse gases

Uh, they already have test tube chicken... McDonalds serves it - commonly known as Chicken McNuggets or breaded rubber peanuts or deep fried Silly Putty.

If something can be grown by genetic engineering that has no adverse effects, and can eradicate famine ,then what is the down side ?

I'm sure they will find a way to grow it out of pond scum Tom, but I now know you wouldn't object, you can wash it down with recycled sewerage.
On the other hand I don't really care what people in other cultures eat so long as I don't have to eat it, but given their success thus far, I wonder whether they will be able to feed it to Muslims or Jews and then when they grow it out of beef will they be able to feed it to Hindus. There goes a third of the market. A little research on who might be starving could be useful or are they serving the chinese market?

It's already been mentioned first for it's impact on emissions (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/current-events/climate-change-579204-11.html#post2829616) as you note, Clete. If it's safe and nutritious then go for it... I'll stick to the real thing.

Are you kidding me? Look what has happened with corn or with the "golden rice" that was suppose to cure famine too. If you can patent it then you can control it.

I'm thinking something more scrumptious, like potted meat.

To some people Spam is considered a delicacy... no kidding. Just ask Magprog. He can tell you...

Spam is good fried and put on Wonder bread with butter and ketchup. (Don't drink anything cold with it. The congealed grease will clog your insides.)
